How did Supernatural get a fake herpes commercial on the air? How did Supernatural manage to end all its storylines without ending the show? Check out two exclusive excerpts from Supernatural's season five companion, on "Changing Channels" and "Swan Song."

Here are the sections on the classic episode "Changing Channels" and the fifth season finale, "Swan Song." Find out how the show's creators came up with the idea of putting Dean and Sam in a sitcom, and how Eric Kripke managed to stage a Sergio Leone-esque showdown between Lucifer and Michael — and why Castiel's "death" was a last-minute decision.

CHANGING CHANNELS

"The clear winner for my favorite episode of Supernatural, period, is ‘Changing

Channels'," states creator Eric Kripke. "Of anything we've ever done on Supernatural, it's the closest approximation of my true sense of humor, which is to say, juvenile. I just loved it. On top of that, to have it not just be an exercise in whimsy, but have a solid and unexpected mythology reason for it, really grounded it.
"The idea originated with Jeremy Carver," Kripke continues. "He began by saying,

‘This pitch is stupid and you're not gonna wanna do it, but I'm just going to say it so that I can get it out of the way. I wanna do Supernatural as a half-hour sitcom. We'd have the laugh track and a whacky neighbor and two goofy monster-hunting brothers who live in a motel and all the wackiness and adventures they have.' My initial reaction was, ‘I love it! We have to do it. But they can't live in a sitcom for the whole episode, so let's figure out other TV genres we wanna have fun with.' We knew we wanted to parody CSI and Grey's Anatomy, because they were our timeslot competition. They're such monster hits, so I always say we're the Japanese businessman cowering for cover beneath Godzilla and Mothra. We're just trying to dodge debris. So it felt right to take out a slingshot and take a few shots at those shows.

"Then Ben Edlund said, ‘We really should do a herpes commercial and build it into the show as if it's a real commercial.' We became enamored of that idea, but the network said, ‘We want to make sure everyone knows that's still part of the show and they don't change the channel or fast-forward on their TiVos or whatever.' We said, ‘But that's the entire point - it rewards people that are paying attention.' The network got really nervous, but we stubbornly insisted on doing what we were gonna do.

"Then we were talking about the shows we loved as kids in which the cars were characters, so we thought, ‘We should do Knight Rider, except that Sam is the car.' We were like, ‘How much crazier can this episode get?' but it always found a way to get one notch crazier. I think the Japanese game show just came out of a desire to watch the guys get hit in the balls. Purely juvenile."

"I was so happy during the nut-cracker scene," says Jensen Ackles with a laugh, "because generally Dean gets the brunt of all the physical practical jokes, and it was nice to actually have Sam get it." In fact, when they filmed the game show, Jared Padalecki was "extremely nervous. I was standing in those ski boots with that big metal bar there, and Lou Bollo showed me how far it would go - but I still put a cup on! I grew up playing football, so I've been hit there before with a cup. It doesn't feel good, but it doesn't make you throw up like getting hit without it. I was definitely nervous, but it was pretty funny."

"When we did the game show I was crying with laughter the whole time," concurs director Charles Beeson. "We got the crew to do the laughter and the ‘oohs' and ‘ahhs', which gave the whole thing life." Editor Tom McQuade would have loved to be in the audience for that, saying, "I hope nut-cracker goes down in TV history! "That whole episode was a hoot to cut," adds McQuade. "Tears were rolling from my eyes from laughing." Composer Jay Gruska also found the whole episode "hysterical. Writing that theme song as if it was a 1980s sitcom theme was an incredible amount of fun," he says. "You gotta love the sitcom!" exclaims Richard Speight Jr. "How many times have we watched terrible sitcoms on TV and thought, ‘Who's laughing at this? Who did they put in the audience?'

"I had some friends who'd never seen the show, so I told them to check it out," Speight continues. "Well, ‘Changing Channels' opens with a really weird, goofy spoof of sitcoms, so my friends found it completely confusing!"
Then again, it could have been even more confusing. Who knows what else went through the writers' minds? "We kicked around a number of things," says executive producer Robert Singer, "but we didn't want to overdo it and make it such a joke that there wouldn't really be room to tell a story in there. There were plenty of other things we could've mocked. Imagine if the show had opened on a spoof of Emeril Lagasse banishing angels with Enochian sigils drawn in pork blood, shouting his trademark, "Bam!"

"You get to do things on this show that you'll remember for a long time," Singer concludes. "‘Changing Channels' was one of them."

SWAN SONG

"The pressure's always on when you're doing a season finale," points out Jensen Ackles, "because they're always the big climactic ending to not only a storyline or whatnot, but to the season itself. After shooting twenty-one episodes it's like running a marathon and then being asked to sprint the last mile. There's a lot of pressure, and I think that raises the level of creativity and raises the bar as far as what people are doing. Like, for the scene with Dean and Sam talking on the hood of the car, I did two takes and I was happy with what I'd done, but being the final episode, I thought, ‘You know what? Let me do one more,' and that ended up being the better of the three. So I think that added effort and that added desire of making this a special episode is definitely something cool."

Something else that's cool is creator Eric Kripke's knack for predicting - or possibly controlling - the weather. "Eric wrote this big sequence with Michael and Lucifer at Stull Cemetery, and any way you scheduled that, it was at least three days' worth of work," says director Steve Boyum. "Plus, Eric wanted a specific consistent Sergio Leone look to this thing. So we searched and struggled to try and find a wide open enough space that we could actually shoot this in and have it be within our field of permitted work areas. Just on the weather forecasts alone, I thought, ‘Am I going to get three days that match? In Vancouver, in March, what are the odds of that?' The odds are so weighted against you. In the week leading up to those three days - we had a Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday scheduled for the Stull Cemetery - the forecast varied where it was going to be rain one day, sunny two days, then sunny two days and rain one day, and it kept veering back and forth and back and forth. It all takes place in ten or fifteen minutes, so you can't have it raining in one minute and then not in the next. But it ended up being three consistently cloud-clear days, which was unthinkable. It's just the luck of Eric Kripke to pull this off."

As amazing as the Stull Cemetery scenes turned out, Boyum says, "The mirror scene with Sam and Lucifer is my favorite scene in ‘Swan Song'. I cracked the mirror very specifically so that the vantage could move from one part of the mirror to another part to another part. That helped me tell the story, because the camera operator did a great job of putting Jared wherever we wanted his image to be in that mirror. I just thought that the whole scene was creepy and weird and unnerving."

The most unnerving part of the episode was probably when Castiel exploded, which was payback from Lucifer for Castiel throwing a Holy Fire Molotov Cocktail at Michael. "They were gonna have Misha Collins chuck it at me from really far away and try to hit me in the chest," Jake Abel recalls, "and I was like, ‘Um, I don't feel comfortable with this.' So they moved him in closer, and thank God they did because the bottle would not break. It was sugar glass, but they have these double-paned ones so that you can throw them without them shattering in your hand, and it just wouldn't break on my chest. It's in the gag reel, so it was worth it."

"That scene has a certain kind of quirk to it, because I just didn't want everything to feel so heavy," says Kripke. "Michael and Lucifer were having conversations about fate and destiny, and I just had this instinct to puncture it, so Dean plays Def Leppard, and Castiel's dying words are calling somebody ass-butt. I just wanted to take the stink off the pretension as much as I could more than anything.

"Other than that, it was about giving it stakes. In the original outline, Cass did not actually die. I think Lucifer did that little hand wave and Cass goes flying into a tree and he's knocked unconscious, but it was one of those things you discover as you're writing it. As I was writing it I said, ‘He just burned Lucifer's brother and Lucifer would kill him! So it was very natural to me that Lucifer's going to snap his fingers and Castiel will explode. For Bobby, the same thing. You gotta make this feel like it's got weight. Sure, he does get an angelic get-out-of-jail-free card, but in the moment of the action, you can't pull your punches. You just have to go for it."
Executive producer Phil Sgriccia agrees. "It was good to have that moment of, ‘Whoa, we're clearing house,'" he says. Jim Beaver certainly "wasn't shocked" that they finally killed Bobby. "I think I secretly thought maybe I'd be the one character who never got killed off on the show," Beaver says. "But dramatically, it was a strong choice. I wasn't surprised or relieved to be brought back to life, because it's beenclear to me for a long time that the producers have no intention of losing Bobby's character for long, unless they've got a really, really good reason. My job is to make sure they never have such a reason."

Almost as shocking as the deaths of Castiel and Bobby was the brutal beating that Dean suffered at the hands of his possessed brother. Ackles was glad that it was Padalecki and not some other actor opposite him in that scene. "It's always good to go up against him during fight scenes because we know each other so well," he says. "My left eye was closed, and I couldn't see his right hand punching me, but he helped me by saying that he was going to lead with his right shoulder to indicate that the punch was coming and that's why I reacted accordingly. If I was doing that [scene] with a guest star that would never have occurred to them."
"Jensen was such a trooper," says Boyum of the scenes where Dean's face was all bruised and puffy. "He was in that prosthetic makeup for probably six hours, and he had cotton in his mouth simulating the puffy cheeks, and he had blood in his mouth and everything else. He's so good at bringing tears when he needs to, so the hardest thing for him was the tears building up behind the prosthetic that was over the closed eye. They had to keep going in and opening it up and letting the tears drain out."

Fortunately, Castiel fixed Dean up, having been resurrected new and improved by God. The big question though is: Is Chuck God? "We didn't want to give a hard and clear answer," says Kripke. "I think you can draw your own conclusion. We did try to raise that possibility. We tried to ask that question in a way that didn't get too pretentious. We wanted to raise the question and give a provocative possibility. We weren't interested in any character ever saying, ‘Well, that's because I'm God.' We presented a little twist, and people will make of it what they will.
"My character starts the season declaring, ‘I'm going to find God,' notes Misha Collins. "I kind of rolled my eyes at that, thinking, ‘How are they going to do that?' Like, ‘Really? God?' Then they kind of resolve that in the last episode. I'm pretty impressed, actually. The episode delivers. In the writers' room, they actually were like, ‘You know what? We're going to do the Apocalypse!' I would have thought, ‘You know, maybe we shouldn't do the Apocalypse. That's kind of daunting.' But they did it!" Similarly, Beaver says, "When we got the scripts for the last episode, I confess I read it thinking, ‘How are they going to do this?' I got through it and thought, ‘This is an incredible wrap-up for this season.' It's a great plotline, and innovative in the extreme, which is what I expect out of Eric. It's audacious. The arc ends brilliantly, I think. I'm always shocked at how well they get themselves out of corners dramatically."

New Supernatural anime series debuts

A new trailer for the Supernatural anime series has made its way out into the world and it clocks in at just over two minutes. Unsurprisingly, there are no subtitles so it's just a visual feast as well as an interesting choice of music that you do not often hear with anime releases simply because of licensing issues (especially if it's used in the show and the series gets released in the US, it could be even more problematic).

The show will be done as a twenty-two episode series and will see a home video release in Japan on 01/12/2011 with the first volume containing the first two episodes. A month later, the first box set will ship with episodes 3-12 and then in April, the last half of the set will be released. The show will be available on both DVD and Blu-ray.

This release will apparently cover the storyline from the first two seasons of the live action series while also having some new original stories mixed in that will include material of the Winchester brothers' younger days and more such as anime-only enemies and stories focusing on the supporting cast from the live-action version.

The Warner Bros. Japan site has listed the specs for the media release in Japan:

Supernatural The Animation Blu-ray vol.1 2011/01/12 - 980yen. Includes episode 1 and 2.

Collector's box 1 2011/02/02 - 12,800yen. Includes episode 3-12.

Collector's box 2 2011/04/06 - 12,800yen. Includes episode 13-22.

The show will be in Japanese and contain English subtitles and the Blu-ray's will be playable in US players.

TV Guide: Supernatural recap : the third man

Castiel's back just in time to deal with a rogue angel who's acting like he's a crossroads demon. Balthazar is living large and buying up souls; he's not worrying about the impending heavenly civil war. Meanwhile, all is right with the world because Dean's in the Impala, Sam's working out, and most importantly the Winchester brothers are working together and posing as FBI agents.

Well, not all is right: Dean knows something's wrong with Sam.

Yes, "The Third Man" happens to be the Season 6 debut of our favorite angel in a trench coat. Castiel is back and we find out he's dealing with a lot. His time as heaven's head honcho seems to have been a tumultuous one. Even though the apocalypse is over on Earth, there's an angel civil war brewing up in heaven. God's still MIA, so Rafael the Archangel is taking this opportunity to stage a coup.

The brothers are on the road together again, but they're driving two different cars, which is kind of sad. No worries though. By the end of the episode, Sam and Dean are reunited in the Impala. But before Cas and Rafael's henchman total Sam's car in that four-story fall, we do get a brief Impala versus Charger scene. Dean can't help but race Sam to the doomed cop's house. Go Impala!

The case involves three cops who died pretty gruesome deaths which mirror three of the plagues (Blood, Boils and Locusts). All three deaths were a little hard to watch. I'm not sure which one was worse. I'm going to go with the first death where the officer liquefied and turned into a pool of blood and skin. So gross! Not as disgusting as the couple that ate each other alive from "My Bloody Valentine" but close.

Sam and Dean find out the three police officers killed a kid and then framed him. Other than that, they've got nothing so it's time to call Cas. Sam understandably is skeptical because when he first got back from hell he tried to call the angel a few times. It turns out Dean had the magic touch because after he tries, Cas suddenly shows up. It's a funny little scene and a nice entrance back into the Supernatural world for Castiel.

I do feel bad for Sam, however, because Sam needs answers. I wish Cas had been there for him, especially after the sacrifice Sam made for the world. I'm happy Dean tried to stick up for Sam here. But I also like how Cas came after Dean called him. After all, Cas is the one that raised Dean from perdition. As the angel states, they do have a "profound bond."

Unfortunately, Cas doesn't have any intel on how and why Sam's back from hell, which is kind of scary. He was so essential in bringing Dean back that I was hoping he'd know something. What he does know is that there's only one thing that could have caused these plague-like deaths: the Staff of Moses. This staff is one of heaven's weapons and in the confusion since the apocalypse ended, it was stolen.

It turns out the brother of the kid that was killed then framed sold his soul to get revenge on the cops. Here's where I start seeing similarities between Sam and Cas. Cas transports the boy (along with Sam and Dean) back to the hotel room. The only way he can find out who claimed Aaron Birch's soul is by torturing him. Dean immediately balks at this action and Sam stands back and lets Cas do his thing. Castiel doesn't listen to Dean; he knows what he has to do. He's been gone from the world for a year and the humanity that he had started to develop has taken a back seat -- just like when Sam's emotion chip has been turned off. Or that's what it feels like anyway. While he did manage anger at Cas for not answering his call, Sam is all business. He knows the only way for Cas to get the information he needs is to hurt the boy, so that's what has to happen.

So for now, Sam's hardcore hunter mode includes breaking down doors without a second thought, standing back while someone causes a kid pain in order to get the latest intel, and paying for sex. Our Sam is paying for sex! Talk about someone who doesn't want any emotional entanglements whatsoever. This disconnect I keep talking about in each blog continues. I'm just wondering how long it's going to be before Sam reboots and all the emotion of what he went through in hell, and even before that, comes flooding back. I greatly anticipate that moment.

Cas' efforts have paid off. An angel that he thought had been killed in the war is at the bottom of it all. He confronts Balthazar who's taking advantage of the chaos that's going on in heaven. He's the one that stole the weapons and he's buying people's souls because they're hot commodities right now. He's tasted freedom and he loves it. He admires Cas' rebellious phase and wanted to experience it for himself. Balthazar seems misguided but not a total villain. It feels like Cas and Balthazar had been allies. They'll stay allies as long as Cas doesn't interfere with his nefarious plans. Thankfully after the archangel Rafael returns (we haven't seen him since Season 5's "Free to be You and Me") and gives Cas a serious beat down, Balthazar shows up with some sort of rock/crystal thing that turns Rafael into a pile of salt: "Same thing happened to Lot's wife."

Dean a.k.a. "the hairless ape" sets the angel trap and Balthazar is forced to let the soul of Aaron Birch go before exiting stage left. I wonder if we'll be seeing this character later on in the season. I guess it all depends on how much time the show spends on the angelic civil war. Balthazar is an okay character. I liked him but he doesn't really add much to the action. Well, except for those handy weapons he stole. I do like the actor who plays him, however. Sebastian Roché is good at playing villains. He's currently playing Newton on Fox's Fringe, but I remember him as Jax's brother on ABC's General Hospital.

As quickly as Cas appeared, he disappeared, leaving Dean to ask Sam what in the world is going on with him. He's different. And he went to hell and he of all people knows what that does to a guy. Sam says he's OK. Dean may have been tortured by hell (and continues to be tortured by it), but he's different. Life in the cage didn't affect him. And we know that's not true. The fact that he's acting all robo-Sam isn't just due to the fact that he's hunted hardcore for the last year. This is more than "rough around the edges." Sam wants Dean to know that his not being affected by his time in hell doesn't mean he's stronger than him, it just means that he's different.

This is a Ben Edlund special so of course I laughed a lot in this episode. I just love his humor. "The Third Man" is not quite as quirky as his episodes usually are, but I feel this is another good hour of Supernatural. This show is three for three this season and I'm looking forward to the next installment which happens to be Jensen's directorial debut, "Weekend at Bobby's.

Supernatural season 6: Returning to it Roots

When Supernatural returns for season 6 on September 24th at 9pm on The CW, there will be a new day-to-day showrunner. Eric Kripke has taken a step back and now executive producer Sera Gamble will be running things. So how will that affect how the show turns out this season?

Season 6 - Returning to Its Roots

When the show first started, there was an underlying theme: this family was on the hunt for the demon that took Mary away from them. Throughout seasons 1 and 2, as they hunted, the Winchester brothers (Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki) hunted a different monster each week. When season 3 began, the Yellow-Eyed Demon (Azazel) was dead, and the brothers spent time still hunting, but with Dean's deal that would send him to hell at year's end over their heads. Once season 4 started, so started the mythology that introduced angels to the show. Season 5 was all about Lucifer and Michael, and in the end, Sam locked Lucifer up in his cage in hell--while he was using the younger Winchester brother as his vessel. Season 6 is supposed to be returning to that "monster of the week" feel of season 1, as the next part of the story is beginning after the "5-year arc for the show...ended."

Kripke to Gamble - What's Changed?

Now that the "guard change" has taken place, "the show's totally different, just in the way that certain scripts are written," according to Ackles, who plays older brother Dean. He went on to say that "Eric controlled the size of the script....he was able to really dial it back and make it a doable show within our budget and the time frame that we were filming." So has that changed noticeably? It won't affect the final product of the show, so it shouldn't be visible to the viewers, but apparently "this year it's increasingly more difficult to film because the shows are so big," Ackles said, adding this required more time and a larger budget. This prompted Padalecki to crack the joke that they "fired Misha [Collins]." As always, there's the humor from those two. But that doesn't mean that they don't trust Gamble to do her job right. Also, apparently Padalecki is "naked a lot more," at least according to the actor. Whether that's true or not, only time will tell as season 6 airs this fall. If it is true, fans certainly won't be complaining. The show was originally going to end after five seasons, so viewers are sure to be happy to see more Supernatural.

Supernatural Highlights at Comic-con 2010

The Supernatural panel at Comic-Con was back to normal with the return of stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. After ending creator Eric Kripke's five-year plan by sending Sam to Hell and somehow bringing him back, season 6 has a lot of questions to answer.

During the panel the cast talked about what's coming up for their characters, what new episodes and monsters we'll see and they showed a video from the Jensen-directed fourth episode of Supernatural season 6.

Here are the highlights from the panel:

-At the panel they showed a video preview of the fourth episode, "Weekend at Bobby's," directed by Jensen Ackles. The episode will focus on Bobby trying to get out of the deal he made with Crowley to give away his soul at the end of season 5.

-Though Eric Kripke's five-year plan is over, he sees season 6 as a sequel to his Supernatural.

-New showrunner Sera Gamble talked about the driving mythology of season 6 being based on the monsters of the week. We'll see more monsters and their backstories will play into the new season. The show will also get back to simpler things, like shooting monsters in the face.

-How did Sam get out of Hell? "Practice," joked Jared Padalecki, stealing the old line about Carnegie Hall. But in reality, he still doesn't know.

-Dean won't be kissing demons anytime soon. However, Sam and Dean will have some lady drama in an episode featuring a female relative of the Winchesters.

-Misha Collins said that Castiel is still busy cleaning up Heaven in season 6.

-Jim Beaver believes that Hell will freeze over before Bobby gets a girlfriend, so don't hold your breath.

-Ben Edlund is writing an episode about fairies that will feature little people.

-Jensen Ackles revealed that the hardest part of directing was having to pay attention to every single line of dialogue in the script and not just worry about his own character. Jim joked around about wanting to give Jensen a hard time by considering staying in his trailer for 30 minutes after being called to set.

-Everyone would love for Jeffrey Dean Morgan to return, but unfortunately he has a very busy schedule.

-Eric Kripke said that he made some changes to the season 5 finale due to the show coming back, but it mostly stayed the same. He said that if it wasn't renewed, major characters probably would've stayed dead.

Supernatural season 6 premieres September 24 at 9pm.

Comic-Con 2010: Supernatural panel on sunday!

TV shows have never been out in force like they are this year at Comic-Con. It’s the place where series such as Psych and Smallville can reconnect with their core fan base, and where people can see pilots and footage of new series that could hold their attention. Fringe had its debut two years ago, and V last year — this year, No Ordinary Family and Nikita are being rolled out for the con contingent. I am lucky enough this year to be involved with some of the TV goings-on, as I’ll be moderating the Supernatural panel on Sunday featuring creator Eric Kripke, new showrunner Sera Gamble, fan favorites Misha Collins and Jim Beaver, and the CW show’s big stars, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. (Perhaps I will get a question in every so often in between all the screams for those two!) There are other must-see presentations to be had, though, so read below for my top 10 TV list. 'Bobby-centric' episode for 'Supernatural'

The upcoming sixth season of Supernatural will reportedly include an episode focusing on the character of Robert 'Bobby' Singer.
In the show, Bobby - played by Jim Beaver - is an old friend of John Winchester and a surrogate father to Sam and Dean.
The character was introduced in the first series finale 'Devil's Trap' and has made regular guest appearances since.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the "Bobby-centric" instalment will air fourth in the season.
The episode will also feature a character named Marcy Ward, "a capable homemaker with a crush on her neighbor" who is "attractive in a down-to-earth/woman-next-door way."
Supernatural star Jensen Ackles - Dean Winchester on the show - will make his directing debut on the episode.

Mark Pellegrino would return To SN!!

Mark Pellegrino has revealed that he would be happy to return to Supernatural in the future.

The actor, who starred in the recent season as Lucifer, told Fearnet that he would love the opportunity to reprise his role.

"Heck, yeah!" he said. "I'd love to be a part of that family again."

However, Pellegrino admitted that he has no idea what will happen to Lucifer in the future.

"I don't know what's next for my character," he said. "I can't say one way or the other. All I know at this point is that my flesh - my meat suit - is gone and, as far as we left it in the last episode, dead. I don't know what will happen."

ABC'c "The Gates" Review

What would happen if you took Desperate Housewives-type characters, gave them fangs, claws, and/or magical abilities, and placed them in a highly secured gated community? The answer seems to be a show that, according to Entertainment Weekly, "gave ABC some bragging points for an otherwise ho-hum night of TV on Sunday." The show, The Gates, "averaged 4.64 million viewers at 10 p.m., [and it] represented ABC’s strongest summer scripted series debut in five years. It won its time slot at 10 p.m. in the adult demographic and came in second in viewers behind CBS’ repeat of Cold Case."

The Monohan family has just moved to the Gates so that dad, Nick, can take a job as the new police chief of the upper scale gated community. Unbeknownst to the family, their new neighbors include vampires, werewolves and witches.

One neighbor, Claire Radcliffe, has given in to her vampire instinct and killed a local contractor. Why? Because she is bored with the life that she has--the PTA meetings, the book clubs... the domesticated life of a domesticated wife. Definite shades of Desperate Housewives can be seen here.

Of course, this isn't merely some paranormal version of Desperate Housewives. If it were, it really wouldn't be worth watching except by fans of that show. No, this show operates on multiple levels--a bit soap opera, a bit detective show (with the police chief risking his neck, quite literally, as he tries to get the dirt on the Radcliffes), a bit teen drama (as the teenaged Charlie Monohan attracts and is attracted to the wrong girl... the one with the jealous football player/werewolf for a boyfriend), a hint of family drama.

This show has some real teeth. After watching the pilot episode, one is left wanting more. What happened before the Monohans moved to that community? What is Donovan up to with her magic potions? Will Claire be able to keep her vampire ways in check, or will she slip again?

Filming of Supernatural set to begin again!

The streets of Vancouver will be filled with trucks and trailers again in a few weeks as most of the filmed-in-Vancouver series return to start work on shows for the upcoming fall season. Here’s a look at what’s returning and when they start filming:
Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki return to Vancouver on June 30th to begin filming Season 6 of Supernatural. The show is slated to continue shooting through March 31, 2011.

It was previously revealed that "Supernatural" brothers Sam and Dean Winchester are bringing their never-
ending battle against the forces of Hell to an animated project called "Supernatural The Animation," slated for release at some point in January of next year. Now, we might have an idea of what that project could look like.

Alleged concept art from the "Supernatural" anime has popped up online over at Saouri's Window, showing possible preliminary character sketches of the Winchester boys, played on the CW series by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. Official or not, it's still pretty wild to see Sam and Dean in illustrated form - really, if there was one currently airing live-action television series begging for an animated translation, it's "Supernatural." (Or "True Blood." Or "Fringe." Really, there are a bunch, but "Supernatural" is still a solid choice!)
According to Anime News, "Supernatural The Animation" is being produced by Japanese studio Madhouse and is co-directed by Shigeyuki Miya and Atsuko Ishizuka. "Supernatural" creator Eric Kripke will provide guidance on the series. The series will be released in two sets of 22 original episodes.

Review: Supernatural, Season one Blu-ray

It's the first season of a series that would become a cult favorite. Supernatural has a fanbase that is just as devoted and passionate as any Joss Whedon series or sci-fi/fantasy show. Warner Brothers has had a piece of magic on their hands with this series since 2005, and I don't feel like I'm going overboard by saying it is, hands down, the best sci-fi series since The X-Files.

The Winchester brothers played by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are supernatural "hunters" who drive from one middle American town to the next in their '67 Impala fighting supernatural creatures like Bloody Mary, a Windego, and the Hook Man. I'm not usually a fan of horror films and television - it may be a little hasty but I typically shun 95 percent of the horror film trailers I see and don't even bother seeing the movies. And let's face it, nearly every horror movie released is just plain bad. It's obvious that the directors and producers of Supernatural were going for quality. From the acting, to the storytelling and the special effects - the show is quality all the way around. The two main characters Sam and Dean, played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles were virtually unknown actors before this series - though they had appeared in small roles on other shows. They shine brilliantly as lead characters here and the chemistry between them is pretty amazing. And instead of pandering to record companies and marketing teams, the producers decided to abandon the usual fare of sup-par angsty teen music and stick to a strict diet of 1970's classic rock that consists of everything from Black Sabbath, and Bad Company, to CCR and Blue Oyster Cult, that gives the show that extra edge it needs.

Season 5 just finished airing on The CW in May, and it's incredible when you look back at the season that started it all and see how far it has come. The creator, Eric Kripke, said he knew from the beginning the story he wanted to tell, and it would take 5 seasons to tell that tale. Watching the series from the beginning, I'm not exactly sure if I believe him. While the later seasons take on some very hard-hitting religious supernatural elements, Season 1 is simply Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) taking on the things nightmares are made of in pursuit of finding their father - a quest that sends them all over the country.

The Blu-ray special features include Paley Festival Panel discussions with the cast and crew, a new The Devil's Road Map (which includes a U.S. map guide to urban legends and facts featured in the episodes of Season 1, unaired and extended scenes, commentary on select episodes, gag real, and an awesome featurette Day In The Life of Jared and Jensen and Supernatural.

CW launches Emmy campaign- could Ackles win??

Though The CW consistently comes in last place in the ratings, there's no denying that the viewers they do have are fiercely loyal and totally obsessed. But are they Emmy voters?
Warner Bros. Entertainment seems to believe they are, because for the first time ever, The CW's shows are being marketed for Emmy consideration.
In the most recent issue of Emmy Magazine, Warner Bros. launched the "OMFG FYC" campaign for its five CW-housed shows, officially submitting "The Vampire Diaries," "Gossip Girl," "One Tree Hill," "Smallville" and "Supernatural" for consideration for Outstanding Drama Series.

Speaking of acting, "Supernatural" star Jensen Ackles is frequently touted by fans and critics as a possible Best Actor contender. Over the last two seasons, Ackles' portrayal of a man who has literally spent 40 years in hell has certainly been heartbreaking and powerful at times. Unfortunately, there are also times that it's been unreliable, occasionally due to inconsistent writing. WB appears to have high hopes for Ackles -- they submitted "The End," in which Jensen pulled double duty, playing Dean Winchester in 2009 and a wearier, tragedy-stricken Dean Winchester in 2014. The two interact throughout the episode, a feat for any actor. (They also submitted "Changing Channels," which will certainly appeal to your average TV geek... and, thus, your average Emmy voter.)

Ackles' skill is improving regularly, and he shows the mark of a true great: his co-stars Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins are markedly better when performing alongside him than they are on their own or with other scene partners. Does Ackles deserve an Emmy nomination this year?

Mitch Pileggi in Talks to Return to Supernatural!!

According to Entertainment Weekly actor Mitch Pileggi, best known for his role of Walter Skinner in the X Files, is in talks to return to Supernatural. A source for Supernatural has told Entertainment Weekly that the actor is in talks to reprise his role for the shows forthcoming sixth season. The actor appeared in a 2008 episode of the series as Samuel Campbell, grandfather to Sam and Dean. The role could be bumped up to recurring for the new series. Mitch Pileggi played the recurring character of Walter Skinner, Assistant Director of the FBI, in the X Files. The actor has also had roles in Stargate Atlantis, Brothers and Sisters, Sons of Anarchy and Grey’s Anatomy.

Supernatural was re-commissioned for a sixth season by broadcasters The CW despite hints by show runner Eric Kriple that he had only planned for five years. During the course of the shows fifth season however, he seemingly softened towards a possible sixth year and later The CW confirmed it was indeed bringing the show back. The series stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki.

-According to Examiner, Jensen Ackles will be directing an episode of the show's sixth season. There have been rumors for a while that we was going to direct, and it looks like season 6 will finally be his time to step behind the camera on Supernatural.

-According to EW's Michael Ausiello, Supernatural is looking to bring back Mitch Pileggi for multiple episodes in season 6. Fans definitely remember Pileggi as Samuel Campbell, Sam and Dean's grandpa who presumably died after being possessed by Azazel.

Is Grandpa Winchester alive? Does this mean season 6 will feature a lot more time travel? I'm not sure how Supernatural could do it, but since she show's biggest strength is the family issues the characters deal with, I'm in favor of bringing back all the Winchester relatives you can.

-Finally, you can check out a quick summer promo for the reruns of Supernatural's fifth season. The narration by Chuck reinforces the importance of family, but for me, the strangest part is hearing "Fridays." At least we have the summer to get used to the idea of Supernatural's new night.

Supernatural: Movie stores Versus redbox

Fans of things that go bump in the night will remember fondly shows like The Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone, but not since the original Night Stalker series (starring the late-great Darren McGavin) have I enjoyed a weekly horror episodic such as Supernatural. It’s the show I’ve been waiting for. Finally, horror meets mainstream on network TV.

In the pilot for Supernatural we witness the fiery death of a young mother as she hovers over her child’s crib. Fastforward several years to Sam, the son who witnessed this inexplicable carnage. Sam has separated from what is left of his family in a desperate attempt to escape this burning memory and lead a ‘normal’ life. When his brother Dean shows up desperate for Sam’s help, they haven’t spoken in years. Dean tells Sam their father is missing, gone too long on a ‘hunting’ trip. Sam is in law school and wants no part of it. It isn’t until Sam’s girlfriend suffers the same fate as his mother that he agrees to help Dean find their dad and the thing that killed the only two women he has ever loved.

Sam and Dean’s pursuit force them to face their demons quite literally. We learn that Dean and his father have forsaken the status quo of daily life, choosing instead to reside on the fringe of society. Their transient existence is solely dedicated to a search and destroy mission of the evil that killed Sam and Dean’s mother. Now in law school, Sam’s refusal to join them in battle has led to years of familial discourse and a severing of ties. Now forced into ‘the hunt’, Sam’s destiny is sealed and there is no going back.

Classic rock blasting from Dean’s pristinely restored black ‘67 Chevy Impala, the search for dear-old-Dad curves and weaves along the back roads of America as they follow clues from Dad’s tattered journal and newspaper clippings of supernatural occurrences across the country. Their travels often take them off-course, placing them firmly between the cross-hares of evil. Battles with frighteningly familiar urban legends like the ghostly girl who hitch-hikes along a desolate stretch of highway, Bloody Mary and The Grim Reaper ensue each week, and we are introduced to characters who are also ensnared in ‘the hunt’.

This is where my synopsis ends. You will have to check out the first season on DVD for any further revelations. Die-hard horror fans may not find the series satisfies their love of gore, but those who appreciate serial tales of the supernatural on a PG-rated scale will enjoy the mysteries that unfold each week. Supernatural offers moments of real suspense, great visual effects, and a bit of humor to break the tension. The writers also manage to make you care about the characters and the situations they are placed in, despite the other-worldliness of the plot.

Brilliantly cast, female audiences will no doubt palpitate over the strikingly handsome Jensen Ackles (Dean) and the boyish good looks of Jared Padalecki (Sam). Dean’s the quintessential ‘bad boy’ with a checkered past, Sam’s the sensitive ‘boy next door’ hiding a dark secret. Fans of Grey’s Anatomy will appreciate Jeffrey Dean Morgan as John, Sam and Dean’s father. Morgan’s role requires real emotion, which he skillfully provides; he is adept at capturing sympathies as well as hearts. There is a soft ruggedness to his own physical beauty that adds believability to a character you may suspect is too young to play the role. The dynamic between the actors and their characters are true to the material.

Supernatural Anime series in the works!

"Supernatural" creator Eric Kripke likely had a nice surprise delivered to his doorstep this morning (June 11) in his copy of The Hollywood Reporter.

As Kripke has stepped down from his position as showrunner - ceding the throne to Sera Gamble - a passionate group of "Supernatural" fans raised money to thank him with a full-page ad in the trade mag.

The ad reads:

"To Eric Kripke,

Over the past five years, we've traveled the back roads of America with the Winchester brothers saving people, hunting things, and kicking ass at the family business. We fell in love with a 1967 Impala, classic rock and emotionally codependent brothers all thanks to you. It was your imagination and vision that brought Supernatural to life and imbued it with such heart and scope.

Thank you for the last five years of Supernatural. Thank you for letting Sam and Dean Winchester be a part of our lives. On whatever road you travel next, know that your fans will gladly shut their cakeholes and ride shotgun with you.

Thank you."

Kripke may have stepped down from his showrunner position, but he's nowhere near done with "Supernatural." He remains on staff as an executive producer, and has also signed on to create an anime cartoon based off of Season 1 and Season 2 of the live-action CW drama, which stars Jared Padalecki as Sam and Jensen Ackles as Dean.

According to Anime News Network, the new anime series will be produced by Warner Bros Japan and Madhouse, which produced anime hits "Death Note," "Paprika," and "Batman: Gotham Night." The first episodes will become available on January 12, 2011 in Japan, and will be dubbed by the same actors who dub Sam and Dean in the live action version. A U.S. release is expected to follow.

The series will include not only the urban legend-based shorelines of the first two seasons, but also new material. Fans can expect "prequel" episodes that delve into Sam and Dean's childhood on the road, new monsters for the boys to fight, and more time with secondary characters.

Those of you who have seen Kylie Furneaux in action, more than likely, have not even noticed. She has fought, fallen and sliced her way through many action and comic book projects as a stunt actor and stunt double. Though her latest role doubling as Jaimie Alexander's Lady Sif character in Marvel Studios Thor has helped bring her to the attention of comic fans, her experience working in comic book related films and TV series is extensive. Kylie was kind enough to take a break from her relentless schedule of training, filming and choreographing to speak with me about the globe-trotting experiences that has given her one of the most respectable resumes in the stunt industry. If you're not familiar with how important stunt acting is, pay attention; Kylie also gives us a break down of how stunt work fits into the the grand scheme of modern film making.

Pietro Filipponi: The majority of our audience may not be familiar with the importance of the stunt industry in Hollywood, especially with so many actors and actresses saying that they do their own stunt work. How would you best describe the role the average stunt person has on set in various scenarios such as body doubling and stunt acting?

Kylie Furneaux: Pretty much anytime an actor has anything that may in any way result in them getting physically damaged in some way they generally have a stunt coordinator and a stunt double on set. If it is something easy like simply getting slapped across the face, it may just be the coordinator who is present to assist the director in making sure the shot looks as genuine as possible. If the slap results in the actor falling backwards over a chair, then the stunt double steps in.

Basically it comes down to the fact that an actor is very hard to replace if they get injured. Especially when filming huge movies, the production would grind to a halt and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars if a star was hurt. It is much easier to find someone of the same height and weight as the actor, throw a wig on them, throw them down a flight of stairs and if they get hurt, find someone else of the same height and weight and put the wig on them.

Many stars these days claim that they do all their own stunts. There are some very talented action actors out there who are more than capable of doing a majority of their own stunts and indeed, sometimes do. This statement does however negate the fact that a very talented athlete spent hours or sometimes days rehearsing the moves and testing the wires and taking the bumps and bruises that come along with finding the best way to do a stunt. Once the moves are completely tested and rehearsed to the point that everyone has made the stunt as safe as it can possibly be, the actor may step in and do the stunt, if production approves the level of risk involved. Sometimes the star may do a toned down version of the stunt and then the stunt double steps in and does a much more violent version. In the edit, production will merge the two versions.

As for body doubling, in most movies there will also be a photo double who comes in to do insert shots. Insert shots are shots of just a hand or foot or something that doesn't require the actual actor being there. Unless the wardrobe is very hard or expensive to duplicate, like in superhero movies, then the stunt double may step in to do photo doubling.

Stunt acting is different from stunt doubling. Although I always say that a good stunt double has to be a good physical actor too. There is nothing worse than being able to tell the difference between the way an actor moves and the way the stunt double moves. A good stunt double will mimic the mannerisms of their actor so it is hard to tell that it is not the actor doing the stunt. A stunt actor is a stunt person who has at least one line or plays themselves in a show. An example is a cop that yells "Freeze or I'll shoot" and then gets shot off a roof.

Long explanation, sorry but that is a complex question.

PF: How long have you been active in this industry and how did you manage to break into it?

KF: I have been in this industry 8 years. I broke into the industry in Vancouver, Canada. I trained really hard in martial arts and weapons, did extra work to gain set experience, got a set of headshots, told anyone who would listen that I wanted to be a stunt performer and finally got very lucky.

PF: Was there a specific role you had that made you realize that this was the job for you?

KF: No. I was simply tired of being an outdoor guide and was looking for an equally as active job.

PF: How do the selection process and work schedule differ for stunt persons compared to actors? Is it similar in both television and film?

KF: Selection process is different depending on the job that you are going for. If it is a skill based job (i.e. Martial arts), there may be an audition of all the fighting women of a certain height and the most talented girl of that height will get the job. If it is just general stunts like falling down or jumping out of the way of something, a person may be chosen because they look most like the actor. This can include approval by both the director and the actor involved. It is similar for both tv and film.

Work schedule is different from actors in that generally a stunt performer will only be brought in for days that there is action required. This especially happens on tv. An actor may work 5 days on an episode but only have action on one day. The stunt performer will be brought in for this day only.

On big budget action movies, a stunt performer may be brought in for the entire filming of the show as there is generally a second action unit going for big action sequences, rehearsals, and a first unit that involves working with the actors.

PF: It looks like your first comic book movie was as Sharon Stone's double in Catwoman, did you work with her personally?

KF: I was the second unit double on ‘Catwoman’. The talented New Zealand stunt performer Zoe Bell was the first unit double and so most of the action sequences I did just involved stunt doubles rather than actors. She seemed nice though.

PF: You also did stunt work for Jennifer Garner on her spin-off film Elektra. She's been known to do many of her own fight scenes, where did you come into play for that film?

KF: I was the second unit double on ‘Elektra’, but this meant that I tested all of the wire stunts to get them ready and safe for both the first unit double and Jennifer. I also rehearsed most of the fight sequences, sometimes with the other actors. Most memorable was my training with Bob Sapp – he is huge and looks so scary but is such a nice man. Jennifer is such a dedicated, talented and hard working actress that she did indeed do much of her own fighting but there were a lot of wire stunts in that film that were way too dangerous for her and so they were done by doubles.

PF: Did you get a chance to travel to Europe to work on Blood Rayne as Kristanna Loken’s stunt double? What was your favorite part of working on that film?

KF: Unfortunately I was just brought in for the re-shoots for that movie so I didn’t end up working on it in Europe. The most memorable part, although I wouldn’t call it a favorite, was that damn weapon that they wanted us to use.

I was brought in as the training sequences in the movie when she was learning weapons skills needed some beefing up. That weapon was so heavy, completely unbalanced and incredibly unpractical. It had a sharp blade on the end that just cut up my biceps and was so hard to make it look good. I could hardly even lift my arms to scratch my nose at the end of that day.

PF: To date, which director do you have the most affinity for and would like to work with again?

KF: I don’t know whether it is just because it is fresh in my mind but I would have to say Kenneth Branagh [the ‘Thor’ director]. A lot of the time stunt performers don’t work very closely with directors. We take our instruction from the Stunt Coordinator who works closely with the director but Kenneth just seemed to have a lot of respect for stunt performers and often would ask our opinion on how best a move would look.

He has a great sense of humor and such a passion and enthusiasm for the movie making process that it was awesome to watch and be a part of.

PF: How was your time on the Fantastic Four movie set?

KF: It was fun. I did some stuff that involved The Thing and that suit was really cool to see in action.

PF: In television, you've had some experience working on two very popular series, Supernatural and Smallville; and you doubled for the lead actresses in both, Taylor Cole and Erica Durance respectively. How would you describe the change in scale when adapting from feature film to TV? Were there any moments from either of those shows that became memorable to you?

KF: The main difference between working on tv and working on film is the speed at which a scene is filmed. A large action sequence on tv can be filmed in a day whereas the same sequence would be covered in much more detail on film and could take up to a month to shoot.

One of my more memorable moments on Supernatural was filming a sequence for Taylor Cole. It still makes me laugh. The stunt was to run and jump off a mini tramp and slam into a wall sideways as high as I could and then smash down onto the hardwood floor. I just remember standing there before the jump thinking, “I am about to jump off a mini tramp and smash into a concrete wall as hard as I can by choice. How stupid am I?!?!” Of course I did it but sometimes I think that you have to be pretty stupid to choose a job that you intentionally hurt yourself as a living.

PF: While we're on the subject of TV, you met Jaimie Alexander while working with her on Kyle XY. Did you two hit it off right from the start?

KF: Kyle XY was an awesome experience. I met Jaimie when the stunt coordinator brought almost every girl in Vancouver out for a fight audition to double the new female lead in Kyle XY. Jaimie sat in during the auditions and then was given the difficult task of choosing her own double. I was so lucky that she chose me.

Kyle was a great show to work on because it was essentially a super hero show and Jaimie was the villain. I got to do so much cool stuff on that show as Jessie XX was always fighting or getting beaten up or generally causing trouble. And Jaimie is such a great person to work with that it was kind of like getting to do adventurous escapades with a good friend.

PF: Practical action over CGI seems to be more desirable now even though the technology currently available would lead to the contrary. What are your thoughts how the stunt industry is changing in Hollywood?

KF: No matter how great the CGI is, there is always something about the movement of it that doesn’t fool the brain into thinking it is real. I think that as the audiences are getting more sophisticated with their understanding of what is going on behind the scenes there has been a movement back into the realism of practical stunts. Most movies I am working on now are choosing for a combination of the two. The stunt is done by a real person first, and then if any CGI is added, it is merely a painting over of what was already there. Even things that are not human but that move that way (i.e. Robots), start their action in a motion capture environment using actors to help with the realism of their movements.

The stunt industry is always evolving as the audience expects bigger, better, more violent and more realistic. I don’t know where this will take the industry in the future but it is certainly requiring a much higher level of skill from stunt performers ie the best parkour (free runner) or Olympic level gymnasts rather than just someone who can hit the ground hard.

PF: Have you had any serious injuries performing any of your work and, if so, on which projects?

KF: I have been very fortunate in my career and not had any really serious injuries. The worst injury I had was on Push where I shattered the head of my arm bone in the shoulder socket. Fortunately it was on the last day of work. I had to do 6 more takes on a shattered shoulder and the stunt never made it into the movie.

PF: You're an experienced rappelling instructor, which is a skill I have a lot of interest in. Most people don't realize just how dangerous it can be on even low-level climbs and descents. How much emphasis on safety have you seen stressed when putting actors and stunt persons literally ‘on the ropes’?

KF: Interestingly enough, the more extreme the industry gets, the more safety conscious it gets. I always have such respect for the stunt people before my time. These days we have low profile pads that we can fit under almost any wardrobe whereas they had none. There is high-density foam that can be painted to look like concrete or wood that can coat the stairs for a stair fall or the ground for a car hit. There are computer whizzes that can paint out pads in post-production (although it is expensive and rare) and there are unions looking after our rights. We have stunt coordinators that are the buffer between performers and directors. It is their job to pull the plug on a shot if it is getting too dangerous. Don’t get me wrong, it is still a dangerous job, there are just measures put in place to ensure longevity in the career rather than needless injuries.

PF: Most of our readers are very aware that Jaimie Alexander has a major role in Kenneth Branagh's Thor. Did your past experience with her help you get selected to double for her in this film?

KF: Yes. She called me the day she found out she had the job and asked me to send my stuff to production. The stunt coordinator, Andy Armstrong, was so nice and really willing to have the actors choose doubles that they had enjoyed working with in the past. I was also fortunate that my strengths are fighting and wirework as that was most of the job.

PF: How long were you working on Thor?

KF: 7 months

PF: Everyone who's talked about Thor has mentioned how immense a production it is and how focuses it's director is on giving it an epic feel. How was it like for you?

KF: It was my favorite show I have ever worked on. I have a personal theory that the flavor of the show is dictated from the top down. Kenneth was such an awesome person and refused to work with people that may cause conflict. This resulted in everyone in every department being so amazingly lovely to work with. He had such a clear vision for this movie and it always felt like we were all striving for the same goal. I truly believe it will be an epic movie. I really looking forward to it coming out.

PF: Did you work exclusively with the other actor's stunt doubles (i.e. Chris Hemsworth, Ray Stevenson) on Thor or did the actors themselves step in and take a few beatings from a sword-wielding Kylie?

KF: I often got to work with the actors on Thor and they were all

fantastic people. An awesome cast who were all very gutsy and into

doing as much of their action as possible. They all learned to fight

and spent many hours in rehearsal for some of the scenes. I was

however never fighting them as we were all on the same team [laughed].

PF: What's a bigger pain in the ass combination to wear for fight scenes: makeup and prosthesis or armor and a helmet?

KF: It depends on the level of prosthesis and make-up. On X-Men 3, I just had a prosthetic jaw so it didn't impede vision or movement, I just couldn't eat or talk. When you have full face prosthetics, it is kind of claustrophobic and sometimes means you can't see who you are fighting, let alone land a good hit.

Armor certainly restricts movement but costumers generally keep in mind the level of action required for the character and try to allow for that in costume design. Helmets throw off all kinds of balance, especially large ornate ones so it is always good to rehearse with things like that so you can change your body movements to suit.

The biggest pain in the ass to wear for fight scenes is actually high heels. Of course no super woman looks good without 5 inch heels! Just try walking in them, let alone running, jumping and spin hook kicks.

PF: Do you find yourself usually working with the same stunt persons repeatedly? How large is the industry?

KF: In Vancouver, where I first started out, the industry was much smaller and I knew everyone by face and name. I always ended up working with the same people.

In LA, the industry is massive. I hardly ever work with the same people twice.

PF: How did you split your time doubling for two different actresses on the TV series Blade?

KF: When the pilot of Blade was being filmed, the coordinator called me up to see if I could double Jill Wagner but I was busy filming X Men 3 so a talented performer called Ashley Earle became Jill Wagner’s main double. But as mentioned, usually with series it is only a day’s work here and there when action is required so I was brought in when Ashley was busy doing something else. Facially I made such a great double for Jill that I was then brought in if they wanted to shoot the stunt from a front angle or close-up. Jessica Gower also had a regular double but she wasn’t a fighter or a wire work performer so when Jessica had stunts that required these skills, I was brought in to do them.

PF: You also did some work for Camilla Bell on PUSH, which was very heavy handed on action. How large of a role did you play in it?

KF: I was in Hong Kong for 6 weeks filming Push. The bathroom fight was the longest sequence I did there but I also did a lot of stuff in the warehouse at the end. It’s such a busy sequence mainly filled with Neil Jackson, who played Victor Budarin, throwing Chris Evans and a bunch of stunt people around the room that my action stuff was either cut out or lost in the background. Camilla was an absolute sweetheart to work with and very gutsy when it came to doing her own action stuff.

PF: Regarding video games, you' did motion capture work on the G.I.Joe adaptation. What can you tell us about the amount of work that goes into a game like that?

KF: I have to say motion capture days are some of the most exhausting days a stunt performer can do. There are positives to it and there are negatives. Starting with the positives… You get to put on what equates to a pair of really tight pajamas and comfortable sneakers all day rather than some of the more awful wardrobe choices we generally have. Also, we generally get to use pads instead of hitting the ground as they are going to CGI everything anyway. It usually involves a lot of physical acting and you can play multiple characters as they are never going to see your face anyway. My most memorable one was playing a monkey because apparently you can turn your character into a monkey. I was laughing so hard making monkey noises and scratching my armpits.

The negatives are that you get hardly any breaks. The lighting and camera set-ups are constantly the same so you are required to do move after move for sometimes10 hours a day. Whereas on film you may get 10 set-ups in a day, with mocap, you do hundreds. I rarely get as exhausted on set as I do during a motion capture session. I may be less injured because of the pads but I can hardly move from muscle stiffness.

They generally tend to be a lot of fun though because for some reason all the mocap crews I have ever worked with laugh a lot, have a lot of imagination and are always extremely encouraging of the effort you are putting in.

PF: You have some other interesting video games roles under your belt, one in particular that caught my eye was as Ms. Marvel for EA Games. Which game was it?

KF: So this Marvel game was never released to my knowledge. It was a funny experience. If it comes out, I would recommend that you pick Spiderman or some other cool character to play with instead of Ms Marvel. She was all about hips and boobs (like any good female super hero). The director had me walk with such an exaggerated hip action I thought I was going to dislocate them. She doesn’t really do any cool moves like Spidey. Her biggest move was a huge right hook but she sure does a killer giggle and simper if you lose against her. It was a fun shoot and we laughed the whole time. I’m gonna say that Ms Marvel was there for teenage boys only.

PF: What roles do you have on the horizon? Are there any projects out there you'd like the opportunity to work on?

KF: I am slated to work on Pirates of the Caribbean 4, which should be really fun. Playing my own character this time.

I am trying to convince Bear Grylls that he needs to do an episode of his show with a female but I think he’s too scared. I was an outdoor guide for 10 years and I think I can give him a run for his money.

PF: If you had a few pieces of advice to offer anyone who wished to pursue stunt acting, what would they be?

KF: There is no easy way to break into this industry. On average, unless you are the best in the world at what you do, it takes 3 – 5 years to begin to make a living at this career. If you decide that this is what you want to do, do it with all your might. It is not something that you can pursue half-heartedly. When I was getting into the industry, I made sure I did 2 things every day that would contribute to me getting work whether it was training, dropping by sets, making phone calls or sending out resumes. Be prepared to work hard. I can’t remember the last time, and I’m talking years, that I didn’t hurt somewhere. Some of them are good hurts like the feeling of stiff muscles from training hard and some are just hurts from constant bruises. Be humble. Even if you are amazing at what you do and feel like you know everything, listen to all advice given to you even if you don’t choose to take it.

Train every day to get in the best physical shape you can be in – you will likely need it. Work on your skill set, the more stuff you have in your bag of tricks, the more likely you will be to work and continue working. Then cross your fingers and hope with all your might that you get that lucky break.

Don’t be discouraged though. When I was starting in this industry I was an outdoor guide from a small town in outback Australia. People told me I was too old and didn’t really have what it took to be a stunt performer. 9 years on I think I proved them wrong. So if it’s what you really want, go for it. If you believe in it enough, it will happen.

Over the past few days, I've compiled questions submitted by members of the CBM community. Due to contractual obligations, several had to be omitted from the interview; but Kylie was more than happy to answer a few:

"Did you get to do any scenes with Jensen and Jared and possibly Misha or only their stunt doubles on Supernatural? If so were they easy/fun to work with?"

- Kim

Hi Kim. I have never done scenes with Misha but I have worked with both Jensen and Jared. They are really down-to-earth lovely guys. And the great thing about them is that they haven't changed at all over the years.

The thing with working on that set is that they have stunts down to a fine art so we generally come in, do the stunt and leave. Not a lot of hanging around so I can't really think of any funny stories from my time with the boys. There was always a lot of kidding around and laughing though.

"How long were you on the set of X-Men 3? What was your role and what actors did you work with?"

- Brian

Hi Brian. I was fortunate enough to work on X-Men 3 for about 3 months. My role was mostly one that we call ND Stunt in the Alcatraz scene. That's when you get thrown in to a lot of different background stunt roles. For example, I was one of the mutants that flew 120 feet through the air off the bridge to land in the compound. I was also one of the people dodging cars in the compound when Magneto was throwing on fire cars down into the compound. I was a soldier that shot at the mutants and I was a mutant getting shot at. Very busy time for me :). My favorite thing I did on the show was being a mutant called The Succubus. I had crazy prosthetics with an awful red wig and I got to fight Hugh Jackman (wolverine). Unfortunately the director decided that he didn't want any prosthetic mutants in the final cut of the movie and my fight scene never made it to the big screen. I got to jump on Hugh and wrestle with him and try to bite his neck for a bit til he threw me off him and stabbed me through the chest with his claws. Fun times.

I mainly worked with Hugh in that scene, something about that Aussie connection I guess. He is one of my favorite actors I have ever worked with. Still very down-to-earth, tough as nails and just a really great, caring guy - even if he stabbed me in the end. I did get to hang out with Sir Ian McKellen and Kelsey Grammer one night between shots. That was quite a surreal moment for me. Beast, Magneto and Wolverine sitting chatting with me. I'm such a comic book geek that I really had to pinch myself.

"I know it's not a comic book series, but I loved Pushing Daisies and I'm really surprised they needed stunt people. What was that like?

- Patrick

Hi Patrick. Shows like Pushing Daisies require stunt people quite often for the comedy moments. For example when someone gets hit over the head with a pie dish, chances are the real hit that makes you cringe was done by a stunt performer. The stunt I did on this show was doubling a nun who had fallen out of a tower. She had stolen some diamonds I think. When Ned wakes her up she tries to get up off a table in a hurry and goes feet over head to the ground, that was me. The crash was to concrete, pretty much flat on my back from about 5 feet up. No actress really wants to do something like that. It was a hilarious show to work on. Those guys really ham it up with lots of improvisation. Also, I had to run all the way out of the church and get grabbed by Lee Pace who I think is a great actor so that was fun for me too.

"I have over 12 years of martial arts training, predominantly in Goju Ryu and Tai Chi. Would I be able to break into the stunt industry for martial arts specific jobs or do I need to be willing to do all the other stuff?"

- Reina

Hi Reina. Very few jobs just require you to fight only. Most fight scenes involve some kind of taking or giving a beating. Believe me, you never win the fight all the time. :). I don't know of anyone who only does martial arts. There are basic skills that it is assumed every stunt performer can do or is willing to do and hitting the ground is at the top of that list.

"I see that you work out with Jaime Alexander a lot, when did that start?"

- John

Jaimie and I have known each other for years, beginning with our work together on Kyle XY. However this training together thing is fairly new. We were required to be in super human shape for Thor and began training hard for that. It is always easier to get motivated to train when you have someone to train with. We both provide each other with motivation to keep it up now the movie has wrapped.

"Where can I see that show you hosted? I live in the US and I don't know if it aired over here. "

Hi Brie The show that I hosted was a pilot episode for an idea I had to let people know that adventure style traveling is possible for anyone. A production company has bought the show and we are waiting to hear if it gets picked up by a network. If it does, it will be airing in the US.

Hot off the press- Misha Collins and Jim beavers fans react!!

Zap2it was the first to confirm that actors Misha Collins and Jim Beaver will return to "Supernatural" in the fall for episodes of Season 6. Collins was promoted to series regular for Season 5, and Beaver has been a recurring guest star since Season 1.

We were thrilled by the news. Beaver is a friend of Zap2it's, and Misha Collins is one of our all-time favorite drinking buddies. However, not everyone was as psyched as we were to hear that we'd be seeing more of the angel Castiel and the hunter Bobby Singer when "Supernatural" returns in the fall.

A debate sparked up in our comments between fans that were pleased by the news, fans that were not-so-pleased by the news, and fans that were downright angry.

Stuart wrote: "Worst news since swineflu. Why do they need Castiel back? He's totally unnecessary now the apocalypse is over. I'd rather gouge my own eye out than watch him deadpan and suck screentime away from The Winchesters ... Have some guts writers and stop making moves because you're afraid of how the fans will react."

Jeanne disagrees. "I'm so happy Castiel will be back. He's the best thing to happen to the show in years. I watch for him as much as Dean and Sam. The show would never be as good without him."

"Their presence is necessary for my happiness," wrote Alexa on Facebook.

Donna says, "I'm thrilled to see Castiel return, less so with that old whiner Bobby.(I still love Jim, just not the direction Bobby's gone in lately). Misha and Jensen [Ackles] just make the screen light up whenever they're on it together and I look forward to much more of Dean and his newly promoted angel."

The conversation even strayed from Collins and Beaver. Val writes, "If anyone's acting on this show isn't on par, it's Jared Padalecki's. I'm not bashing him because I think he's a sweetheart and very funny and loving in real life, but unless he's playing evil or something comedic, he looks constipated. Face twitches and practically melting your forehead [does not equal] showing emotion."

Look who is returning to Supernatural!

Supernatural fans can rest easy this summer thanks to Zap2It. The site confirmed that both Jim Beaver and Misha Collins will be back for season 6. It's unclear if that means for one episode or most of the season, but whatever the case, Sam and Dean won't be alone.

The bigger question is how. Chuck's closing narration mentioned that Dean and Bobby's farewell marked the last time they'd see each other for a long while, which might mean that Chuck isn't the infallible deity I thought he was.

Is Chuck Shurley God?

Castiel was last seen heading back to Heaven to take control of the chaos left in Michael's absence, so somehow the new sheriff of Heaven will worm his way back into Dean's heart. It definitely means that angels aren't leaving anytime soon.

Most importantly, more Cas and Bobby means more Misha Collins and Jim Beaver, which is a good thing. They've become as much a part of Supernatural as Sam and Dean, so it would've been hard to imagine a show without them. The show will already have one big change for season 6 (creator Eric Kripke stepping down as show-runner and is being replaced by writer/producer Sera Gamble). Having some familiar faces around should make the transition a lot easier.

If you watch TV shows from the 80’s and 90’s, chances are you’ve seen the work of Kim Manners. Kim’s first gig as a director was on an episode of Charlie’s Angels. From there he went to direct for more than thirty different TV shows before he hit his first big claim to fandom fame - The X-Files. As both a director and a producer, Kim had a huge influence on the feel of the show and it became the jewel in his crown. So much so that he pretty much retired when the show was done. But then Supernatural came along. The new spooky series for what was then The WB, had some similarities to The X-Files, including the Vancouver shooting location. With a very green creator at the helm and two young actors as the only recurring characters, execs new the show would benefit from an experienced hand. As Manners tells it, he was lured out of retirement in order to get the show off to a good start. He never expected to still be there three years later and he didn’t expect to become the cornerstone that he became.

At the beginning of the show’s fourth season, in 2008, Kim Manners was diagnosed with lung cancer. He kept it a secret from nearly everyone around him and he kept on working as long as he could. He succumbed to the illness in January 2009.

At the time, series creator Eric Kripke released this statement:

“Everyone at ‘Supernatural’ is walking around in a daze, shocked and absolutely devastated. Kim was a brilliant director; more than that, he was a mentor and friend. He was one of the patriarchs of the family, and we miss him desperately. He gave so much to ‘Supernatural,’ and everything we do on the show, now and forever, is in memory of him.”

And that’s one of the reasons why Kevin Parks is going on the ride of his life next month, doing his part to help conquer the disease that took away his friend and mentor. Listen in as we talk with Kevin Parks about his upcoming ride.

Why did you sign up for the BC Cancer Foundation’s Ride to Conquer Cancer?

Parks: My participation in this year’s ride is in honour of Kim Manners. He was not only one of our Executive Producers and directors, but he was also a friend. I had worked with Kim on The X-Files as well Supernatural where we became friends. As the year went on, more people that we worked with were passing away from cancer and then my aunt found out that she had terminal bone cancer. In addition to Kim, I wanted to do this years ride to help anybody that could beat this disease.

You’re Team Supernatural – can you tell us about the Supernatural connection and how the fans have helped your efforts.

Parks: My wife, Jill and I are Team Supernatural. I am riding and she is volunteering. I have been with Supernatural since the very 1st episode, Season 1 in Vancouver as one of the 1st Asst. Directors. Jill has worked freelance on the show, since Season 1 when we are in need of extra camera crew. When we both decided to be part of the ride, and in honour of Kim Manners, we chose Team Supernatural as our name, with the support and encouragement from our producers, crew, fans and friends. The fans have been great with their support of the us and the ride. With just the fans support we raised $2500.00, the minimum amount of money needed to participate. Now, we are about to surpass $8000 with the ride still a month away. We can not thank the fans enough for their support.

The course seems pretty extensive. Can you tell us a bit about the where the journey will take you.

Parks: The ride is a two day ride from Vancouver to Seattle. There are 2500 registered riders, and a team of volunteers (medical, mechanical, caterers etc). The 1st day we ride around 110km and the 2nd day we ride about 105km. The route makes it’s way from the farming suburbs of Vancouver, through scenic western Washington to the town of Mount Vernon. Everyone overnights either at the camp set up by volunteers, or in hotels. The 2nd day takes the riders into the University of Washington to finish and then everyone ( riders and volunteers ) are bused back to the start line.

How have you been preparing for the ride?

Parks: I cycle to work when I am prepping and not on set, which is a commute of around 40km total. As well as, I ski during the winter to keep active on days where cycling is not possible. To build up the endurance for the ride, I have been getting out on my road bike to get longer distances at least 3 to 4 times a week. I have been doing a blog on my home page for the ride, if you want to read about the training.

I think many people don’t participate in things like this because they don’t want to think about cancer. What are your thoughts on that?

Parks: Until someone is personally affected by cancer, it is human nature to not want think about these diseases and how their life might be affected if it happened to them. Getting involved with events like this, allows everyone to learn about people and their triumphs and tragedies that have happened because of Cancer. It can be very emotional. I think everyone needs to be ready to part take in an event like this or other causes and only that person will know when they are ready. In the end, people will save people and it is events like this that will help in that journey.

Will vampire Henry Fitzroy return??

TORONTO -- The Fremantle Corporation and Kaleidoscope Entertainment are developing a new vampire series, "Smoke & Mirrors," based on the "Smoke" book series by Canadian fantasy author Tanya Huff.

Kaleidoscope in 2007 turned Huff's "Blood" book series into the Lifetime Television series "Blood Ties," which also aired in Canada on Citytv and Space.

Fremantle and Kaleidoscope are now shopping "Smoke & Mirrors," starting at MIPTV, as a possible Canadian-European co-production. The urban fantasy series will see the return of Henry Fitzroy, the 474 year-old vampire, in a series of paranormal misadventures experienced on a fictional TV series shoot.

Kaleidoscope president Randall Zalken will executive produce the Canadian vampire drama.

The launch of "Smoke & Mirrors" comes as Toronto-based Fremantle continues developing a slate of commercial dramas as co-productions for global distribution.

The pipeline includes the western mini-series "Doc West," co-produced with Italy's DAP, and 26 episodes of a new animation series, "Fang Force," co-produced with Britain's Strict Machine.

The strategy is to tap tax credits and other soft money available from official co-production partners.

Kyle Schmid(Blood Ties) wins the sexiest man in the vampire Realm!!(Beating out you know who!!)

January 1st of 2010 was the day my curiosity was awakened. In an article titled "Vote for the sexiest man in the vampire realm", Kyle Schmid was chosen as the winner. He was nominated two days after the voting had started and on the last day took the lead over Robert Pattinson with votes continuing to come in right until the last minute. Who was this Kyle Schmid? I had never heard of him before. But he had just won a poll over the "sparkly one". Take the following statement from someone who knows all about TwilightMania. At this stage of the vampire craze, not a soul usually wins a poll over Mr. Pattinson. This definitely left me dazed, confused and fascinated.

After hours and hours of watching season one and two of Blood Ties, I then researched and viewed Kyle's many other performances. That was when I realized the answer to the question, "Who is this Kyle Schmid?".

A Canadian born actor with an incredibly devoted fan base. Television's best portrayal of a 450 year old vampire. A nice guy. An actor with amazing potential. A handsome, talented actor and truly a lovely person. An amazing young man, one who is genuine, true, and honestly appreciates his fans and the opportunities that come his way. A rising star destined for bigger and better things.

Ok this isn't Wikipedia's definition, but it is an assortment of comments left by his fans on other sites. If this is the first time that you have heard the name Kyle Schmid, then take note. Watch Blood Ties and you will see a performance by this actor that truly left me in a trance.

Supernatural season 6 spoilers and SN moves to Fridays

The CW's new fall schedule was released today (read it here), and Supernatural fans aren't going to be happy about the fact that the show has been moved to Friday nights at 9:00 p.m. Now, I know you're all loyal, but no one can be happy about this. Oy.

Some of you may also be less than enthused about the press release about the show that accompanied the CW's Upfront release this morning. We've posted spoilers recently about how the Apocalypse storyline will be over and now we have a good idea of what will happen next season.

Season six will be a season of mystery and shadow. Heaven and Hell have been left in complete disarray since the apocalyptic events of season five. And now, monsters, angels and demons roam across a lawless and chaotic landscape. And so Dean Winchester, who has retired from hunting and sworn never to return, finds himself being pulled back into his old life – pulled back by none other than Sam Winchester, who has escaped from Hell. The two reunite to beat back the rising tide of creatures and demon-spawn, but they quickly realize that neither are who they used to be, their relationship isn’t what it used to be, and that nothing is what it seems. The series stars Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester, Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester and Misha Collins as Castiel.

So, this seems like a reversal of the pilot episode, right? Sam pulling Dean back in instead of Sam. Put THIS together with all of the other spoilers and I'm pretty sure that whatever/whoever Sam was that we saw at the end of the season 5 finale won't be telling Dean that he's alive and Dean will go on to live a normal life. Then something big will obviously happen, prompting Sam to go and get his brother and bring him back into the hunting life.

The only thing I really, really hate is that line about how the brothers are now different and their relationship isn't what it used to be. The brothers' relationship has been degrading since season 4 and, in all honesty, it hasn't gotten better as time passed. It's kind of hard to reconcile the deep and abiding love they have for each other (this willingness to die for each other) with the fact that they could barely stand to be around each other or the lack of trust. Yeah, relationships are complex, but you need to fix the Winchesters' relationship, not make it worse. That's the whole point of this show. I thought that the 100th episode and the season five finale went a long way to repairing their relationship – that the brothers learned to trust each other again and refused to let the other die alone, but this release don't make it sound promising.

UPDATE: Ausiello is reporting that the earlier spoiler that was circulating about Supernatural jumping forward a few years might not necessarily be true:

Apparently, Jensen Ackles was asked in a recent interview what he would like to see happen next season, and he threw out the idea of a flash-forward. And like a game of telephone, that got turned into “Supernatural is jumping forward!” Could it happen? Sure. Will it happen? That’s yet to be determined.

In any event, we can conclude that some time does pass between the season five finale and the start of season 6. Chuck did say that Bobby and Dean wouldn't see each other for a long time and the press release below does denote that Dean has time to settle into his normal life and decide not to return to hunting. Could that mean a 6 month time jump? Or something longer? We don't know.

In any event, if Sam hides the fact that he's alive from Dean for a while, Dean is gonna be pissed. Can't wait to see that.

But did you see the really good news at the very bottom of that release? "Supernatural stars Mischa Collins as Castiel". Those of you who wondered whether Cas would return next season can breathe a bit easier. It sounds like he will be. And Jim Beaver (who plays Bobby) already confirmed on his Twitter account that he too wound be back. This is a good thing, because otherwise the only secondary characters left on this show would be Lisa and Ben (and since they're aging Ben, they're probably going to find a new kid to play him).

I played two lies and a truth with him about the finale, and he told me that, “All the main characters die. Some of the main characters die. None of the main characters die.” I thought his wording was funny because it meant that (unless he was tired and worded it wrong) either more than one of the main characters had to die, all of them would die, or none would die. And as it turned out, two of the options were true! At first, two of the main characters did die – Bobby and Castiel! Gasp! And then, they both came back. Interview with SN's Sera Gamble

Last week, Supernatural ended with an apocalyptic season finale called "Swan Song" where angels fought Lucifer - and got audiences debating the true identity of God. We talked to showrunner Sera Gamble about what it all meant.

io9: Did you guys change "Swan Song" at all after you got picked up for another season? Was that how you were always going to end the series?

SG: We knew we were returning for another season well before Eric [Kripke] sat down to write the finale. So, the episode you saw was the story he worked on from the beginning. As for whether or not the episode resembles Eric's vision of the series finale, had the story ended there ... this is a great question for someone to ask Eric. I'd feel weird speaking for him about what was in his head.

When I talked to you guys at Comic-Con back in the mists of time, [then-showrunner Eric] Kripke mentioned that we'd be meeting God this season. Does that mean we actually did meet God, and now we're left guessing about who it was (Chuck, Crowley, Joshua, etc.)? Or did you guys decide to leave God out of the picture?

I love a good God debate, so it's nice to hear we got one going this season. We purposely left a bit of room for interpretation. Although many of your readers probably just read that sentence and rolled their eyes because they feel like we made it all very obvious by the end.

Nobody thought it was obvious! Do you mean Chuck is the obvious answer, or that you really did leave it open?

Don't ask me to squish the God debate! How many TV shows can say their fans are talking about THAT stuff?

Can you give us any broad hints about what to expect next season? Anything. That was such an intense cliffhanger. We're dying here!

Well, it was a great season finale - we really loved it.

Supernatural: Guide to the Hunted Review

It’s a big year for Supernatural. The tv show has been renewed for an unexpected sixth season (the original story arc only called for five), they are flirting with the GhostFacers webisode series, novel tie-ins are seeing print, and the rpg license remains strong. The newest addition to the line, Supernatural: Guide to the Hunted, is one of those supplements players need to complete their series. The corebook possesses plenty of material for game masters; however, this book adds flavor for those wanting to run something straight from the television series. I’ll get back to this later in the review.

The layout and artwork to this book understandably follows the format of the corebook, which is a clever look matching John Winchester’s monster bible. The fake Post-It notes, sketches, photos, and scribbled notes make for an eye-catching read. There are times the look may distract readers into reading bits out of order, but, in the case of this book’s direction, that’s okay. Nobody ever said a Hunter’s monster bible would be an easy read.

The majority of the book rests on the descriptions of various monsters, demons, angels, and Other Thing Under Your Bed. New Assets and Complications are in the book, but are seeded midst the creatures descriptions. Since the book addresses “playing monsters fighting monsters,” this created a bit of jumping around. For someone familiar with the book, it’s probably not an issue. For a handful of friends looking to make some characters for a pick-up game (because Supernatural is an excellent choice for such a game), it’s a little user-unfriendly.

The creatures receive much better descriptions in this supplement than the brief collection in the corebook. In fact, the authors seem to catch damn near everything through the end of the fourth season (and perhaps a bit into Season Five). There are lots of photos from the show to help jar memories for some of the forgettable monsters; however, the writing paints pretty meaningful pictures.

While the vast majority of the book is a “monster book,” roughly twenty pages gets devoted to curses, hexes, mystical illnesses, and the other “problems” the Winchesters had to face that didn’t fall into the broad monster category (such as the lovely Bela Talbot). The final fifteen pages work to explain how to create your own monsters and run campaigns where the Hunters are also monsters. For me this last chapter could have been larger and would have made the book more exciting for me. It’s a lovely book that works not only as a gaming tool, but also a terrific armchair guide to the monsters of the series. For me, it may work a little bit better as the latter than the former. Here is why:

I don’t want to run games where the players take on the Winchesters’ cast-offs. It’s the bane of licensed material. How do I run a musical episode like on Buffy? What if I turned my entire cast into puppets like on Angel? What if I run a game where two sisters hunt the supernatural while trying to avenge their dead parents? All of these make for excellent gaming material, but still ring a little bit hollow on the originality side (yeah . . . I know “nothing original under the sun”). To the authors credit, they do address this concern with a sidebar on page 120 “Filing off the Serial Numbers.” Also, I had the pleasure of taking part in Floyd C. Wesel’s (one of the authors) GenCon sessions in 2008. There is a mine of originality waiting for players of

this game; however, because of the link to the tv show, they have to work for it.

As far as “monster books” go, Guide to the Hunted wins marks in design and detail, but doesn’t engage the reader as well as some of White Wolf’s Wicked Dead or Pelgrane Press’ Book of Unremitting Horror. At the least, a small campaign (with an original nasty or remix of an existing nasty) would have strengthened the book. I won’t rule out the strong possibility that licensing tied the authors’ collective hands behind their back. There were doubtlessly things they could and could not do with the material at hand. My scores for Guide to the Hunted are:

New Chad Lindberg Interview!

You came back to the show after a long absence. How were you met at the Vancouver set? Did you enjoy meeting with all of your colleagues?
It had been about 3 years since being on Set. It was very exciting to come back and see old faces. The show has been very good to me, and it was a pleasure to be back. Jared and Jensen we're still their classy selves. As well as still seeing some of the same crew again. It's also nice because "Supernatural" shoots about 2 hours from where I grew up in Washington. It's close to home so I'm able to visit family as well.

Any bloopers or funny moments on the set this time? Please tell us, we like to read about behind the camera scenes.

In the last episode I did, "Dark Side of the Moon", I had to shot gun a beer. To everybody's surprise I had never done it before and I had to learn before shooting that scene. Jensen gave me a shotgun 101 lesson. I gave it quite a few practice tries before actually doing it on the day. During one take..I didnt tip the head of the can all the way up, so beer was pouring out of the side and going all over my clothes and the Mullet. I told the camera's to keep rolling. I was looking in Jared's and Jensen's face and they had tears coming out of their eyes trying to keep it together. After about a minute Jensen finally yelled cut and everybody including the crew had a good laugh. It was definitely a moment for while shooting.

How many takes have you done with that can of beer? Very spectacular trick. By the way, tell us, please, what sort of beer do you prefer?

It was probably 4 or 5 takes. Like I said I hadn't done that before and Jensen very patiently showed me how. When I have a beer I prefer a good Amstel Light or Corona;)

Ash could get into personal Heaven of different persons. If you would place in his position, which Heaven would you like to visit?

My friends and family's heaven definitely. Just as long as I'm able to see them. I hope to get to see Dinosaurs on the Other Side too. How cool would that be??

It would be so great if God will bring Chad back to life in Season 6. Is it possible, what do you think? If you could bring one person back to life, who would it be?

It would be an honor to come back in Season 6. We'll see what happens!!!!! I mean, it IS Supernatural!!!

While Ash was gone a lot of changes happened. Evil angels appeared, God which tries to get away from all this human problems. Do you like this kind of turn in the story? What do you feel about it?

The show has gotten very dark along the way. I think it's awesome. I think darker the better. Good Vs Evil... can't go wrong with that!! I have complete faith in the Supernatural Writers:)

Please tell us about your projects in the present time and about your future plans. When and where could we see you on TV or big screen?
I have a few Movies coming out this fall. A movie called "Once Fallen", with Ed Harris. And the remake to the old Horror Classic "I Spit on Your Grave" due out this September. Also, a real life Do*****entary called "My Big Break".

What`s on top of your " to do list" in this moment of your life?

To just be happy and take my career to that next level. I'm really excited to see what's in store for me over the next 3-4 months. I'm ready to take the ride:)

Since I promised, here is the interview Jensen gave to a brazilian magazine. There are a few spoilers, so I put a warning before and the color is white, but if you think it's a problem let me know. I also apologize for the bad english, I did the best I could. If there's anything you don't understand, let me know, I'll try to find other words.

Away from his dark pass in afternoon soap operas, Jensen Ackles is establishing a career on prime time by giving life to Dean Winchester, the most charming demon hunt on tv. Essential to Supernatural, especially after season 5, delivering great performances, Jensen is one of the reasons the show is a success and that recently reach the 100 episodes milestone. His character has to choose between faith and family, while, personally, the decisions are less apocalyptic, but equally interesting: directing or acting? After a strong handshake, he explains his career, characters and the future, on the show and professionally, in this exclusive interview to Sci-Fi News, at the luxury Hotel S&L at the most famous zip code of television: 90201.

I’m so sorry for you! (laughs) Terrible, right? I don’t know why they keep inviting those two (laughs).

They talked about all the changes the show has suffered. How do you feel about the changing from telling “urban legends” to decide the future of mankind?

At first, I hesitate and got a little nervous for dealing with this theme, which can be really difficult. Eric (Kripke, creator of Supernatural) told me: “Look, I’m not trying to recreate the Bible, I’m just using those elements on a fictional story”. So I decided to keep my attention away from that, after all, I come from a very religious family, like myself. I wasn't worry, because I didn’t feel offended by anything on the show. The last thing I want is my grandmother calling to say (imitating grama’s voice): “do you have any idea of what you just said and did on the show, mister?” (laughs) Luckily, they (the family) understood and never complained about it.

It might not be offensive, but it might be a difficult decision, being a religious person, to see the Apocalypse and say no to Michael: which is the “right thing” to do and any Christian wouldn’t think twice.

According to the story, sure. The lack of Dean’s faith is something so interesting to play. He reacts to situations so different than me. A lot of people ask me what are the similarities that I share with Dean, I say that this relation has change during the show. In the beginning, we were very alike, because I didn’t know who Dean really was, so he was me on screen. With time, the writers, Eric and I were defining this guy and, believe me, now he speaks, talks and think so differently, whether comparing the first season or me. He’s tough and funny as well. He’s the guy who every (or almost) time gets the girls. My relationship with him has changed a lot and always surprises me, now everything seams new to me. That’s why I love acting.

And, speaking of development, while most tv shows gets paranoid about renewals, you got an early announcement. How that changes the environment on the set?

The pressure is off and helps us thinking on what’s important, instead of being on backstage wondering about the negotiations and having doubts about next year. Having a job for another year is great, especially in this industry. But, now, the pressure goes to the writers. They need to create a new season. Honestly, season 6 is the one that intrigues me the most, because Eric had this five year plan when he created Supernatural. And he stayed true to that. He never said: “look, they want a sixth year, so, I’ll stretch the fifth and keep dragging on”. Eric is not that kind of writer and nothing indicates that this is going to change. When he presents questions to the audience, he answers those questions, unlike some shows around. There is a lot of confidence on this production and the audience feels that.

SPOILER - IF YOU DON'T WANNA KNOW, DON'T READ

I’m excited about next season because we’re pushing the “restart” button.

How come? By the way, how is possible to continue after getting the Apocalypse done?

For the creative aspect, we need to understand we just got over a gigantic climax and we’re getting into an unknown territory. The Apocalypse was avoided. That’s why we getting forward a few years and see where the Winchesters are and how it’s their lives. I can’t help, but think of the final scene of “The Hurt Locker” (2009 Oscar winner), when the main character sees himself in front of a shelf with several cereal boxes and doesn’t know what to do. The guy disarms bombs in Iraq, but gets lost on the supermarket! That is not his reality, just like not being a hunter looks like a different world to Dean. All his life was dedicated to one single task, almost like a voluntary slavery, now it’s time to face the monster of real world. That’s totally new to me, through the acting perspective, and I’ll explore a lot more of Dean’s life, that’s why I’m so excited. A kind of introspective tension, like inside monsters.

How do you evaluate the feelings between Sam and Dean on season 5? They lost faith on each other, got back together, got separate again, but they are still together…

It’s a constant approval and disapproval relationship on the trust aspect. They want to believe in each other, but always happen something to destroy that. When it happens, they doubt so intensely, but, in the same way, something always comes up to show there’s still hope. I like this dynamic, this constant battle to define their loyalty at each episode or season. This back and forth is appealing to the audience, because nobody knows where their lives are leading on; it’s a constant doubt: are they a team? Are they planning something behind each others back? Who is going to be the first one to change his mind?

Well, the fact that they can eventually try to kill each other during the Apocalypse helps a lot on that aspect…

Totally, it’s like Cain and Abel. Who is going to give the first punch, it’s the bigger question.

All those changes also affected, for example, the choice of the songs on the Impala or even the passion for Cheeseburgers? And these are also your personal choices?

A lot of this is my fault, I must admit (laughs). The classic rock’n’roll was always there; Eric insisted: a muscle car and classic rock. I guess he was tired of so much pop invading tv (laughs). Now, the food: I’m guilty! Why would I lie? (laughs) Right in the beginning, they put these sausages next to me on a scene. Then I got one and ate. The director told me: “keep eating, it’s funny!” (laughs). I though it was great, but I didn’t imagine that, from there on, every time Dean got a chance, he’d be eating. I love cheeseburgers!

I got ask: how did that scene of The Eye of the Tiger happen? Was it planned or it was a spur of the moment thing?

(laughs) It was all spontaneous! The music was playing out of the car, so I could follow the rhythm and Jared (Padalecki, co-star) should come near, knock on the car and say something like, “dude, turn off the music; we have better things to do”. He decided not to do that, just so see what I’d do. That’s what I did (laughs).

Playing Dean gives you a lot of opportunities to do drama, comedy and, of course, action. The perfect opportunity to find yourself. Do you know the kind of genre you like better?

The one that gives me a job (laughs). Action and comedy appeal more to me, but my mind is on working with who makes me a better actor. I practiced sports when I was a kid and I notice that I’d get a lot better when I played against someone who had more experience than me or if they were better than me; I’d put more effort and apply more. So, if I could at least have contact with the true talents of this industry and absorb what they have to offer, it'd be terrific. Being a tv actor allows constant evolving. I started to be interested by the camera movements and how directors tell stories by lens positions. There’s a lot more than be a character and entertaining the audience. To be able to see how all this happens and understand its motivations, why a certain angle was chosen, etc, for example, it's very fascinating. I’ve learned a lot along these five years.

You spoke like a real director. Have you ever thought about putting this into action?

Funny you ask. I haven’t mentioned this to anyone yet, but I was offered the direction for one of the next season episodes. You can’t imagine how excited I am.

Can you say the number of the episode or something about the script?

I don’t know yet. They just told me: “you deserve!” I didn’t ask for it, which made the whole thing even better. There wasn’t a negotiation, no agents; it was recognition from the crew to my interesting and ideas. They notice because of my active participation on the scenes, sometimes, even helping to direct when we were given the opportunity. If one of the directors asked me what we would like to do, I’d always suggest something related to positioning, camera’s angle and movements to have intensity on the scenes. That helps to give more speed to the whole process and it works. When I got the invitation, I felt awkward and really surprised! A lot of people want to direct on Supernatural.

Did you discover this desire on Supernatural or you thought about directing before the show?

It was during the show. I didn’t have that desire before.

Beyond the suggestions, this new perception also affects your acting stile, doesn't it?

Very much, because my interesting was beyond the behind the scenes and it got me confidence to pay attention on the other artistic aspects around me, the lighting or the cameras. Now, I read the scripts in a different way, beyond the simple preparation and starting to think about how my actions could improve the scene. Like, if the script says is going to be a movement conversation inside a motel room, I know that I won’t have a lot of space to move, because the camera would be steady, so, if my action is going to be limited to a small area or a table, whatever, I need to be prepared for that reality. It’s the camera and the acting working together.

That situation starts some kind of “familiar” competition, like, Jared is going to direct as well?

(laughs) No. Especially because it’s not something he’s interesting in as much as I am. He respects the things I like and got really excited by the news. When I told him, he said: “That’s awesome, man! You deserve. It’s going to be great!” During the last five years, he’s the person I spent more time with, so we know each other really well.

Being such a focus guy, and young, it is very surprising to see you talking about directing in such a serious and intense way. Especially in a time that almost the majority of “young stars” live in the gossip papers. We never see you there. This is a great thing, isn’t?

It’s really good. Just because it’s not the kind of attention I want. It’s easier since we shoot in Vancouver, I stay away from the Hollywood madness. But even if I was close to it, we shoot 12, 14 hours every day. We don't have time to do anything and to think about doing stupid things like taking off my shirt and run around LA. (laughs)

Your fans would sure love that!

(laughs) I need to remember that I’m 32 years old and I’m not some stupid kid. I want to make a career and I take the whole thing very serious, I respect my job. That doesn’t mean my life is boring, far from that, I have a lot of fun. I can enjoy as everybody else, but I know that doing this on a daily basis, it’d be the same thing as sabotage myself. It’s a delicate career. A lot of good people who made a lot of success vanish just because they didn’t have an opportunity, so stay focus is the main thing to do. I don’t want to end up like Corey Haim. It’s tragic, but it’s also a hard and a good lesson to any young actor.

Is SN moving to Fridays for season 6?

The CW's Upfront presentation is this Thursday when the network will announce its fall lineup including new shows, returning shows, and new timeslots. While we know some things (six shows have already been renewed), the rest of the schedule is still a mystery.

One thing that could definitely change is when fans can watch the sixth season of Supernatural. The show was already renewed, but its Thursday timeslot at 9pm might be in jeopardy.

As proof, you only need to look at the CW's summer schedule. On May 27, Supernatural will air in its original timeslot with an encore of the season 5 premiere, but the show will then move to Friday at 9pm the following day. Starting Thursday, June 3, reruns of Moonlight will take over Thursdays at 9pm while Supernatural reruns will continue airing Friday nights, following Smallville.

Is this a temporary summer shift or a sign of a more permanent move? The truth is that The Vampire Diaries is the most successful show on the network, so the CW would be smart to use its popularity to build up a new show after it instead of leaving Supernatural where it currently is.

What's the Plan for Supernatural Season 6?

A move to Friday would also pair it with Smallville once again. While some critics, myself included, expected Smallville to fizzle and die after it was thrown to Friday nights, it did surprisingly well. Maybe its strength has led the CW to consider moving Supernatural to Fridays as well.

We'll find out officially on Thursday, but if I were programming the CW, I would definitely move Supernatural. The show has one of the most loyal fan bases on TV and they would follow it anywhere, so the network could rebuild a strong Friday night and find a hot new show to team up with The Vampire Diaries on Thursdays. From where I'm sitting, it's the smartest move president Dawn Ostroff could make, so now we just need to see if she'll do it.

Wonder who will die tonight?

It's the season finale of Supernatural, and we're taking bets on which Winchester will die. C'mon, you know it's gonna happen. It's an annual tradition, practically, and since it didn't happen last year thanks to some Godly intervention, we're doubly due. Will it be Dean again? Sam again? Half-brother Adam, who's also going for his second? Or will they throw us for a loop and kill Bobby Singer for the first time? That would be a real kick in the pants, especially since he just got the use of his legs back, but then, he did recently sell his soul to a demon. I forget, does Dean's deal with Death come with any life insurance for anybody?

Hell, maybe everybody will die. After all, the big plan is for Sam to let Lucifer possess him, then for Dean to open up his prison cell using the Four Horsemen's rings, then for Sam to jump in. But it looks like Samcifer (Lucifam? Kissyfur?) beats the snot out of Dean, and don't forget Adam is now the host for the angel Michael, who's basically waiting to smite Samcifer, which means there's a big target on the back of anybody in his general area. Plus, I don't trust the demon Crowley, because even though he threw the ability to walk into Bobby's deal for free, he still seems to be hiding a lot of stuff. Of course, it may be just the fact that he's played by the always-shifty Mark Sheppard, who's been shifty on Chuck, Firefly, Dollhouse, Warehouse 13, BSG and pretty much every other sci-fi and fantasy TV show of the last ten years. (I'm curious to watch something where that guy plays a hero.)

Supernatural has been on TV long enough that Jensen Ackles feels he has grown up in front of the camera.

“It’s a very common phrase we use on set: ‘Wow, you were much better in your 20s,’ ” Ackles said. “And it applies to a lot of people.”
Ackles may have turned 32 earlier this year, but neither he nor his character on Supernatural have slowed down. In fact, when Supernatural airs its fifth-season finale on Thursday, (CW, Sun-TV in Ontario), the series essentially will wrap up the main spooky storyline that has played out over a half-decade.
But here’s a fun twist: Supernatural has been renewed for a sixth season. The intensely loyal fans of the show, which is shot in Vancouver, simply have refused to let go of demon-fighting brothers Dean Winchester (played by Ackles) and Sam Winchester (played by Jared Padalecki).
“Eric (Kripke, creator of Supernatural) wasn’t going to tap the breaks when they found out they were going an extra year,” Ackles said. “He wasn’t going to stretch five years over six. He was like, ‘I am going to do the five seasons, knock it out of the park and then figure it out from there.’
“So for me, my anticipation of the first script of Season 6 is going to be higher than almost any season.”
First things first. As the fifth season closes, Dean and Sam still are trying to prevent the apocalypse.

“I was like, ‘So wait a minute — these two brothers are now the vessels for the entire apocalypse?’ ” said Ackles, recalling his reaction when he realized where the story was going. “I didn’t see that coming.

“But it’s kind of, ‘Go big or go home.’ And Eric is going big.”

By the way, we hope we get to see more of Death this week. That dude really gives us the creeps.

“I think people just like to get scared and we’ve been doing it successfully,” said Ackles, pondering the longevity of Supernatural. “It’s an adrenaline rush.

“But what really has kept people coming back is the relationship between these two characters. And once we found our audience, they couldn’t take us off the air.

“Jared and I joke that we’ve been Sam and Dean Winchester over the past five years more than we’ve been ourselves.”

Heck, any series lasting six years is a heck of an accomplishment. Ackles — a native of Dallas whose notable previous roles were on Smallville, Dawson’s Creek and Days of Our Lives - understands how fortunate he is in that regard.

“I was just talking to Josh Jackson (currently of Fringe) who did six years on Dawson’s Creek,” Ackles said. “He goes, ‘You are moving into your sixth season (on Supernatural), aren’t you?’ And I did the sixth season of Dawson’s Creek with him.

“I said, ‘I remember you guys (on Dawson’s Creek) were just champing at the bit to get out of there.’ He said, ‘Yeah — are you about ready to be done?’

“And I’m like, ‘No, I’m not, actually.’ ”

Apocalypse be damned.

'Supernatural': Rock on the Road

On The CW's Thursday drama "Supernatural," demon-hunting brothers Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles) travel the highways and byways of America in a 1967 Chevy Impala.

Now what sort of music would one play while driving such a car? Somehow Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z and Miley Cyrus just don't cut it.

If you're hunting ghosts, ghouls, zombies and even the devil himself in a classic muscle car, you need some classic muscular rock 'n' roll, and that's just what "Supernatural" delivers.
Composers Christopher Lennertz and Jay Gruska create the show's original score, while music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas is in charge of picking the pop songs.
Calling in on her way to the Coachella music festival, Patsavas says, "When I got hired for 'Supernatural,' I had an extensive conversation with the executive producers about the music on the show. They knew from the beginning that they wanted it to be their very favorite, iconic popular rock songs from the '70s and '80s, but mostly from the '70s.

"It has a very road-trip flavor. Aerosmith and Blue Oyster Cult, those are the kinds of bands that we use on the show."

For example, here's a sampling of songs from the current season, the show's fifth: "Thunderstruck" (AC/DC), "Long, Long Way From Home" (Foreigner), "Spirit in the Sky" (Norman Greenbaum), "Won't Get Fooled Again" (the Who) and the theme from "Knight Rider."

Other 8-track classic bands featured include Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Rush, Metallica, the Rolling Stones, Iron Butterfly, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Ted Nugent, Three Dog Night, Journey and REO Speedwagon.

Some rock anthems have become integral to the show, such as Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" (not hard to guess why) and especially Kansas' "Carry On Wayward Son."

It's easy to see how a song that opens with the lyrics "Carry on, my wayward son; there'll be peace when you are done" could apply to a pair of brothers with serious father issues on a seemingly endless quest to save the world from evil forces.

"A definite favorite of the executives," says Patsavas, "and a song that we actually use for all of our season recaps."

While the show's two leads - Ackles (in picture, at right) was born in 1978 and Padalecki (in picture, at left) in 1982 - are probably too young to have grown up on many of these songs, Patsavas doesn't see that as a problem.

"It's probably before the time of much of the audience," she says, "which is perhaps why they've responded so well to it, because maybe it's the first time they're hearing these songs.

"I actually think the actors probably feel really good about it, since it's exactly what their characters would be listening to."

Although the composers don't get to pick the pop tunes, they do get to hear them, and they do have opinions.

By e-mail, Lennertz answered a few questions about the "Supernatural" songbook:
Q: What songs and/or bands have elicited the most response from viewers?
A: "Definitely 'Carry On My Wayward Son' by Kansas. All of the AC/DC tracks have been big hits."
Q: Has doing this job made you a fan of any bands or songs you weren't an admirer of before?
A: "Have a huge newfound respect for both Kansas and Blue Oyster Cult."
Q: What songs would you like for the show but still haven't been able to use?
A: "Led Zeppelin would be perfect, but they will not license."

Q: What personal favorites would you like to hear on the show?

A: " 'Stone in Love' by Journey, 'Fade to Black' by Metallica, 'Running With the Devil' by Van Halen."

Mark Pellegrino sees Jacob as Jesus

It's difficult not to see religion in Lost - what with the ongoing battle between light and dark on the island.

But now one of the show's stars has made a direct connection between the show and the bible, could it be that Jacob really is Jesus?

Mark Pellegrino, who plays the Island's enigmatic guardian, told artistdirect.com: "I approached Jacob as Jesus the carpenter. Jesus in the crowds, Jesus with the people. He looks at you and he can see into you. And you feel like you are being penetrated by him and that he knows you.

"Yet he is simple and unassuming, and that's kinda the way I felt about Jacob. If he does something miraculous it's simple. And he can see into you, he's got the wisdom to see what you are about and see into your soul.

"The argument has been set up ever since the first episode that you see [him] with the Man in Black. We both have different points of view about people. Mine is that they are redeemable, and his is that they are not."

Bobby gives up his soul for “Death,” & more in CW’s “Supernatural” episode 21 of season 5. We’ve got some spoilers for the episode,along with a promo clip after the jump. The episode is entitled, “Two Minutes To Midnight,” and things heat up when Bobby gives up his soul for the opportunity to get the 4th ring from the “Death” horseman. Dean has a very interesting meeting with “Death,” and more.

In “Two Minutes To Midnight” episode, Crowley (guest star Mark Sheppard) will tell Bobby he will give him the location of Death (guest star Julian Richings) who is the fourth horseman, in exchange for his soul. Bobby will reluctantly agree to the deal because he knows Dean and Sam need the fourth ring to stop the Apocalypse.

Dean and Sam will confront Pestilence (guest star Matt Frewer). However, he will unleash a deadly virus upon them,so Castiel will have to intervene on their behalf. Death will start killing people. Dean will meet with Death to discuss Lucifer,and an unholy alliance will be formed at a very high price for Dean. “Supernatural” episode 21 of season 1 airs Thursday May 6 at 8pm central time on the CW.

Happy Wedding Month...

Yes, folks, that infamous time is finally upon us: Jensen Ackles and Danneel Harris are set to be wed this month after a few years of dating but only a few months of being engaged. I don't usually like to comment on celebrities' personal lives, but I've seen Jensen through the good relationships (long-term with UCLA student Lisa Rideg back when he was on Days of our Lives) and the questionable (sorry, but just like how I couldn't get into Dawson's Creek, I couldn't get behind a "relationship" with "actress" Joanna Krupa!). He seems to be a serial monogamist, and I'm honestly not sure I can even remember a time when he didn't have a pretty girl on his arm. But never before did he seem so complete-- the young kid who was all about his family finally seemed to find one of his own-- with Danneel and their little baby Icarus.

Jensen and Danneel are really cute together, and they seem equally really happy, whether she's sitting with him during autograph signing at conventions to show moral support or they're hugging and whispering to each other in a corner of an LA bar. You kind of can't root against them, and I don't know why you'd even want to. I've said it once, and I'll say it again: if you're a true fan of someone, you want them to be happy no matter what. So let's raise a glass (or in my case, a cupcake) in congratulations to the soon to be Mr. & Mrs. Ackles!

This enables him to speak to Lucifer, who tells him he needs Lilith to be released from Hell to break The 66 Seals that hold him captive. Lucifer tells Azazel he also needs to find a very special child.

1973, April 30 - May 2 - Azazel meets the Winchesters; events of 4.03 In The Beginning

Mary Campbell (later to be Mary Winchester) and her parents - Samuel Campbell and Deanna Campbell - are hunters living in Lawrence, Kansas. People in the area are dying, and it appears their deaths may have been caused by a man with "yellow-eyes" who makes a deal with someone who wanted the person dead (for example the son of an violently abusive man, a woman whose father is terminally ill) in exchange for permission to return to them in ten years time.

Dean is sent back to this time by Castiel, and warns the Campbells that the being is a demon. He steals the Colt from Daniel Elkins, but fails to kill the demon we will later know as Azazel.

Azazel meets Mary Campbell and likes what he sees - her bravery and hunting prowess.

Azazel possesses Samuel Campbell and reveals to Dean that he makes the deals with people he deems 'perfect parents' so he can return and feed demon blood to babies, which will endow them with demonic powers.

Azazel tells Dean that the aim is not only to create beings to lead a demon army and taunts that "my end game's a hell of a lot bigger than that".

Azazel kills both Samuel and Deanna Campbell, and Mary Campbell's fiancee - John Winchester. He offers to bring John back to life if Mary will make a deal to allow him to enter her home in ten years time. He adds "as long as I'm not interrupted, nobody gets hurt, I promise".

Mary agrees to the deal. The Azazel seals it with a kiss.

Richard Speight Jr On Gabriels Demise!

Richard Speight, Jr. should really have a killer headache – on last week’s Supernatural, the hammer of the Gods came down squarely on his head.

Actually it came down on Gabriel’s head. And we’re the poorer for it. Fans appreciated the character’s snarky wit and strange fascination with the Winchester boys when we only knew him as The Trickster, but once it was revealed that he was in fact the archangel Gabriel, the popularity of the newly complicated character soared. And within hours of Gabriel’s demise at the hand of his brother Lucifer, fans began posting tribute videos, meta lauding his sacrifice, and fanfiction lauding his other attributes *ahem*. There’s even an online petition to bring Gabriel back to the Show. As the petition says, “Gabriel is both the source of good humour that was always part of the Supernatural series, and has a strong, captivating character, and it seems unfair to us, fans, that he got written off the show when he just started to develop plot and back story of his own.”

So, we wondered, what does Richard think of the flurry of appreciation and protest?

First, he thinks this fandom is awesome. “How great are these fans?” he asked. “They get so involved – and they mean business!”

One of these days, the rest of the world will realize that too. Don’t mess with fandom!
He also shared his thoughts on Gabriel’s demise.

“From an actor’s standpoint, I’m sorry it had to happen. It is the most fun character I’ve ever been paid to play. I am going to miss it. Big time. From a character standpoint, I’m glad Gabriel went out like a man. Odd analogy for an angel I suppose, but if you think about it, it fits. So often, the angels on this show are bitching and moaning and manipulating – and no one has been a bigger weenie than Gabriel. He has avoided the whole conflict by hiding behind a different persona. Finally, at the 11th hour, he ‘cowboyed up’ and faced his issues – which in his case happen to come in the form of the all powerful Lucifer. He should have come up with a better plan of attack, but the fact that he attacked at all is a miracle. What’s more amazing is that he did so at a time when the boys truly needed him to. He helps them survive, then salvages his own eternal reputation by confronting his brother and shooting straight with him for the first time ever. He went down on the right side of the fight – the human side – and he went down swinging. And that’s a damn fine way to go out.”

Richard also had some observations about Dean.

“As far as Dean goes, he seems really comfortable telling Gabriel to take on his brother – and even kill him – when there have been many times that Dean has seemed unwilling to do the same. Perhaps Dean needs to take a page from the Gabester (that’s Gabriel + The Trickster) and listen to his own advice.

No wonder everyone wants him back. Fingers crossed, fandom – – this is Supernatural, after all!

Unholy Cause: Interview with Author Joe Shrieber

Eclipse Magazine had the recent opportunity to chat with Joe Schreiber. He is the author of one Star Wars novel and a second in the works, three original horror/suspense novels, and now his first Supernatural novel, ‘The Unholy Cause.’ We are also fortunate enough to receive an excerpt (or two), which we will share with you in the coming days prior to the novel’s official release date of May 4th.

But before we get to that, let’s get to know the man behind the words.

Joe Schreiber (pronounced SHRY-ber) is an MRI Tech by day and writer by night. Or perhaps that should be the other way around since he works the midnight shift. He is a normal family man, married and father of two, ages 6 and 8. The typical middle-class family that also includes a family dog, a poodle named Hank. Yet inside that normal facade, he harbors the mind of a scarily twisted creator of words that are dripping in chilling suspense and horror. Which is exactly what one needs to write a Supernatural novel.

Throughout his life he has lived in all corners of the U.S. including Alaska, California, Wyoming, Michigan, Los Angeles, New York, Portland, and currently Pennsylvania. This gives him a unique perspective on these areas and a certain authenticity whenever he writes stories based in any of these locations.

Among his favorite books and movies are an eclectic mix of horror, thriller and suspense. And rock music figures prominently in his collection. If there were any doubt, the original title of the novel would have been the quite-appropriate ‘I Don’t Need Your Civil War’ by Guns ‘n Roses. But since it couldn’t be the title, the song still got a shout-out. Now, without further delay, let’s get to our Q & A covering the assignment, his inspiration, and some interesting insight.

ECLIPSE MAGAGINE: Joe, thank you for taking this time to chat with us and welcome to the Supernatural family! Tell us a little about how you got your start as a published author, your first novel, and how long you have been writing.

JOE SCHREIBER: I’ve been writing seriously since I was thirteen. I wrote my first novel when I was sixteen. It was about a wrathful Old Testament god that goes on a rampage and traps a bunch of people – including a motorcycle gang – in a church and kills them off one by one. Pretty awful. After college I got an agent and she sold my first published novel to Putnam, a psychological thriller called ‘Next of Kin.’ Also pretty awful, but it sold.

EM: How were you fortunate enough to land this assignment? Is it something you pursued, or did others approach you?

JS: I was talking to Chris Cerasi, the head of licensing at DC Comics. We’d been chatting about me doing a Batman novel, and then one day he said, ‘we need this instead, can you do it?’ And I said okay. (EM Note: Apparently this is a question on a lot of minds. Joe provides an in-depth explanation on his blog, so please be sure to check out THIS entry.)

EM: Looks like we have something in common. We both work in the medical field and love to write. What are the challenges in balancing the needs of a family, a full-time job, and finding time to feed the writing muse – and all on a deadline?

JS: Every day’s a challenge. Sometimes it is frustrating. Fortunately I have a very understanding wife and family, and when things work out, it’s extremely satisfying. While I was writing this book, my boss at work was able to restructure my days so that I was working three sixteen-hour-days in a row, giving me more than half the week at home. It was brutal, but effective.

EM: What and/or who would you say was your biggest influence in writing?

JS: Probably Stephen King, Roald Dahl and Ray Bradbury. And Harlan Ellison. And the animated movie HEAVY METAL.

EM: Would you say that aspects of your favorite novels and favorite movies influence your own writing in some manner? What are some of those aspects that you have tapped into and/or incorporated?

JS: I think it’s inevitable that elements of books, movies and even music trickle in to cross-contaminate whatever I’m working on at the time, purely as a matter of tone and mood. One of my favorite parts of the process lately has been cooking up a playlist of songs that are in my head when I’m working on a given project. It’s like a feedback loop.

EM: How would you categorize your work (sci-fi, horror, mystery, etc)?

JS: They’re stories, that’s all. Just stories.

EM: In terms of working with editors and publishers, how difficult is it to incorporate suggestions or changes to your manuscript, especially when you don’t necessarily agree with the recommendations? Does this happen frequently?

JS: The amount of editorial work really varies from project to project. It’s almost always useful – particularly when you’re working in someone else’s sandbox and continuity is a huge issue. So I say thank you, and go back to work.

EM: You’ve written both, original novels and tie-ins based on existing characters. Which is easier?

JS: I wish I could give a generalized answer on that, but I can’t. Star Wars: Death Troopers was one of the easiest writing experiences of my life. The sequel, which is due out next year…not so much. The Supernatural book was written in about three weeks, but it took a month of edits to get it into shape. I’ve had similarly varied experiences with my original work, which has taken anywhere from months to years to reach the finish line.

EM: This latest novel in the Supernatural universe is titled ‘The Unholy Cause.’ Can you provide a brief synopsis of the story?

JS: Our boys find themselves down South investigating some suspicious activity in the middle of the Civil War re-enactment. It seems that an ancient religious/occult item has turned up — a sort of supernatural noose — and things get quickly out of hand, demon-wise. There’s a smoking hot sheriff named Jackie Daniels, some 70s Clint Eastwood references, rock n’ roll and a runaway train. Classic Winchester stuff.

EM: Where did the inspiration for this story come from? Was it uniquely yours, or from a collaboration/discussion with Supernatural’s creative team? It was very impressive in terms of details of the urban legend and how it all tied in to the hunt!

JS: The idea was mine. The creative team basically reined in my nonsense when I wandered too far afield and took too many liberties with the show’s mythology.

EM: In the Supernatural timeline, when do the events in this novel take place?

JS: Sometime midway through our current season, I believe, after Sam and Dean have had their rapprochement.

EM: Fans of the TV show Supernatural are quick to criticize a novel in that ‘it doesn’t follow the timeline’, not realizing the lag of time necessary between writing the book to actual publication. How much time will have elapsed from the moment of getting the assignment to the point of seeing the book on the bookstore shelves?

JS: I got the assignment in August and they started sending me scripts for forthcoming episodes, all stamped official and confidential, so I could at least try to stay ahead of the curve. At one point I was sitting on something like two months of top-secret stuff. I turned in my final draft at the end of November.

EM: Too bad I didn’t know you had all that top secret stuff back then! I would have tried to come up with some creative blackmail schemes. How are you able to ensure that events taking place in the novel are able to correlate to events that will be taking place on screen? Are you provided with a synopsis of the story before it airs? Does the creative team in Los Angeles have input in the direction of the events in the novel?

JS: Out of necessity, we worked pretty closely with [Executive Producer and Creator] Eric Kripke and his group throughout the process.

EM: Supernatural Creator, Eric Kripke, appears to be a bit of a hermit lately. What can you say about working with him?

JS: Eric’s way more fun in person, especially once you get a few drinks in him. (Actually, I’ve never met him. But he does seem very nice in interviews.)

EM: What familiar characters can we expect (other than Sam and Dean, of course)? Can you tell us anything about any new characters?

JS: Castiel’s in there. There might be one or two other Hunters that look familiar. And I got to write some fun original characters too—at least, I thought they were fun.

EM: Which character was the most fun to write? The easiest? The most difficult?

JS: Sam and Dean are a hoot because you can pretty much hear the dialogue as you write it. Castiel’s a little tougher, because he’s so formal, but he gives you a great opportunity for humor and perspective.

EM: Would you consider yourself a fan of the show, fully entrenched in all the details, or a voyeur who knows enough of the important things to get by?

JS: A voyeur, definitely. I took a major crash course in the show when I took on the project last year and sucked up everything I could from the books, magazines, shows and scripts. But I hope to make up for my ignorance with raw enthusiasm.

EM: Unlike an original novel, you are entering a genre environment by writing something based on Supernatural. Clearly, you have already had some experience with that in your work with the Star Wars novels. Genre audiences can be extremely loyal, but extremely critical as well of their favorite characters. Do you ever have time to see what is being said online, and how does that effect your approach to your work?

JS: One of the first things my editor told me when I started writing the Star Wars novels was to stay away from online forums. It’s good advice.

EM: The excellent writing team of the television series has mesmerized audiences in the flawless way it is able to blend elements of horror, drama, comedy, scares, myths and legends, which are all anchored in a heartwarming and heart-wrenching family drama featuring one of the best brother relationships to come along in ages. Did you also attempt to balance all these challenging elements?

JS: Absolutely. To my mind, good storytelling emerges first and foremost from compelling relationships between engaging and sympathetic characters. Comedy, horror, myth and suspense are all outgrowths of that initial relationship. If you can accomplish that—and I agree that the Supernatural team certainly has—then you can take the reader (or viewer) wherever they want to go. They’ll not only come along willingly—they’ll race you there.

EM: You posted a great playlist of rock and classic rock songs that you created while writing and editing the manuscript for “The Unholy Cause.” Was this playlist just for the novel or is this your music of choice as well?

JS: I listen to everything, but those songs came off my iPod, so yeah…I definitely listen to that stuff.

EM: Once you turn in the final manuscript, is your work over or are you on pins and needles to see the feedback and how successful it is?

JS: I’ve been very fortunate the last year or so to have plenty of stuff on my table. The day after I turned in the Supernatural manuscript, I started working on my next project. Until I got my copy in the mail the other day, I hadn’t thought about it in several months. I certainly hope people like it… I think it worked out pretty well.

EM: Have you had the opportunity to converse with any of the other authors of Supernatural novels?

JS: No.

EM: Many fans of the TV series may be discovering you as a writer for the first time. What would you like them to know about your work? What other novels of yours would you recommend?

JS: Try ‘Chasing the Dead’. It’s a pretty good sample of what I do, and it’s quick. I think you can get a used copy on Amazon for a penny.

EM: What new projects are you currently working on?

JS: I’ve got another Star Wars novel coming out next February. I also have a young adult novel called ‘Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick’ in the pipeline and a something’s-in-the-water horror novel called ‘Stillwater’, although that one might be dead, I’m not sure. I’m writing a screenplay and a TV pilot.

EM: Any indications of any more Supernatural novels in your future?

JS: Not as yet…

EM: I know quite a number of people who are very talented in writing and currently they are able to express that talent only via fan-fiction. What advice can you provide them in taking their passion to the next level to become professional?

JS: My advice for writers isn’t particularly original, but it’s still the best advice that I ever got: keep writing, keep reading. Don’t just read the sort of stuff that you write…read everything you can get your hands on, poetry, mysteries, literature, SF, ‘mainstream’ fiction. Be as objective as you can about your work, even if it means putting it away for six months or a year and getting it out again. If possible, find a reader whose opinion you trust and who won’t just tell you how good your stuff is when it could be better.

When you think you’re ready, find an agent. I don’t know of any publishers that looks at unsolicited work without literary representation. The internet has lists of agents and the types of material that they represent.

Set goals and don’t quit. Make peace with the fact that you may spend months and years of your life on material that will never see the light of day. It’s a lifetime gig. The world is full of people who aspire to write, but those who actually do the work will outlast the aspirers, no matter how talented they may be.

EM: And on that excellent and inspiring advice, we brought our chat to a close. I thanked him for taking the time to share this info with the readers of Eclipse and wished him much luck and success with The Unholy Cause and other projects.

Tired of the conflict between Angels and God - his family - Gabriel the Archangel has been on Earth disguised as a Trickster. In this role he goes about giving people their "just desserts" - punishing people in a way that ironically fits what he sees as their 'crime'. He likes the good life - wine, women and is known to have a sweet tooth. Gabriel is very powerful; he can alter reality, Gabriel possess some degree of super strength, he proved this when he pinned Dean to a wall.

No Rest For Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Jeffrey Dean Morgan might be starring in a big-screen film called The Losers, but he feels nothing like one.

"I feel like every day I'm exceedingly lucky," says Morgan, who is calling from the backyard of his house in Los Angeles.

He turns 44 on Thursday, the day before The Losers opens. "I hope the birthday present will be people going to see this baby," he says with a laugh.

Morgan is a familiar face from television. He played heart patient Denny Duquette (a love interest of Katherine Hiegl's Izzy) on ABC's Grey's Anatomy, and he also played dad John Winchester on CW's Supernatural.

You've also seen him on the big screen in the 2007 drama P.S. I Love You, 2008 romantic comedy The Accidental Husband, 2009 action thriller Watchmenand director Ang Lee's music comedy Taking Woodstock. The mix of movie genres is not by design, he says.

"It's a matter of following the good material. I'm not trying to be an action star, and I'm not trying to be a romantic-comedy guy," Morgan explains. "If people are going to give me the opportunity to do different things, I'm certainly gonna take them."

Another graphic-novel adaptation

And what about The Losers, an action thriller based on a graphic novel about a special black ops team that is trying to get out of a dangerous situation?

Morgan first read the script four years ago and loved it. At the time, director Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, Hancock), who worked on the screenplay adaptation, was attached. After a couple of director changes, Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) signed up for duty. "I met Sylvain one day at a little cafe. ...
And lo and behold, six months later or something, there we were in Puerto Rico shooting."

Morgan was confident about his preparation for the role. "I had done a lot of stunt training and fight training. I felt pretty comfortable in that world, especially after doing Watchmen." And he was also confident about his co-stars. "I think all of us learned a lot, and it shows on the screen."

His Clay leads the team in The Losers, which also stars Chris Evans, Idris Elba, Columbus Short,
Jason Patric and Zoe Saldana.

"Clay is the decision maker, although he runs everything by his men," Morgan says. "He's very in control. He's the planner of the group, the thinker. And yet he's the guy who very much cares for his guys. They are his family."

The movie is based on the graphic novel series by Andy Diggle. Morgan is a fan of the literary genre. "Watchmen introduced me to it, and now I love it," he says. "Hollywood in the last three, four years really grasped the idea of these graphic novels."

Having material to refer to is a bonus, Morgan says. "I learned that doing Watchmen and carried it through doing Losers. You could turn to page 31 of the graphic novel (as a reference)," he says. "And it helps a great deal in building that foundation of a character."

Morgan stars in another ensemble cast action movie in November that offers a different reference point. He's playing "Col. Andy Tanner in the reboot of Red Dawn (1984). The role originally played by Powers Boothe," says Morgan, who "was a big fan of that film, and when they approached me, it was kind of a no-brainer for me. I thought, 'What a fun gig that would be.' "

More prep work

Morgan isn't complaining about being busy. "I wake up every morning and pinch myself because I don't know what I'd be qualified to do if I weren't doing this," he says.

At the end of a long day of shooting, Morgan, who is single, will unwind by taking his dogs on walks. His Rottweiler, Bisou ("kiss" in French), is big sister to Bandit, a mutt he rescued and adopted in Puerto Rico while shooting The Losers.

What's next? He is prepping for The Fields, produced by Michael Mann (Heat, Public Enemies) and directed by Mann's daughter, Ami Canaan Mann. Morgan and Hollywood's latest "it" guy, Sam Worthington (Avatar, Clash of the Titans), will star. Filming starts in May in New Orleans. Their characters are based on real detectives looking for a serial killer. "I spent the last of couple weeks, Sam and I both, doing ride-alongs with LAPD and going to a morgue and to a detective school run by the L.A. sheriffs," Morgan says. The two also traveled to Texas to meet their real-life counterparts.

"I'm doing more research for this movie than I've done for anything combined in my life," Morgan says. "It's intense and amazing, just getting into the minds of these guys, so we're going a hundred miles an hour over here."

After all, he says, "No rest for the wicked."

Or the lucky.

Talk about a split personality complex. For the past year, Mark Pellegrino has been dividing time between Vancouver and Hawaii playing polar-opposite characters—Lucifer on the CW’s Supernatural and the God-like Jacob on ABC’s Lost. With Lost concluding May 23, and Lucifer’s season-long scheme of unleashing the Apocalypse finally set to explode on Supernatural’s May 13 finale, expect cataclysmic shockers for both shows.

First, on Lost, we’ll learn that Jacob—soon to have a confrontation with Jack—may not be so godly after all when his character takes center stage in “Across the Sea” on May 11 (followed a week later by the penultimate “What They Died For”). “Jacob has a lot of darkness and corners we haven’t explored yet, so the differences between him and Lucifer are not as much as you would think,” says Mark, an L.A. native who shares a passion for martial arts with Lost rival/real-life chum Titus Welliver (Man in Black). “With these archetypal characters, the boundary between good and evil becomes blurry. Jacob’s on a mission. It’s your judgment as to whether he’s good or bad.”

There’ll be no such debating Supernatural’s devastating season ender. Per Mark, Lucifer seeks “revenge on God for betraying him by annihilating God’s primary love—people. And let’s put it this way: You should definitely expect some pretty crazy bloodletting.”

As for his own beliefs, back in his mid-20s, Mark, now 45, was baptized in an L.A. pool as a born-again Christian, but now has a more “spiritual/philosophical” point of view. Claiming to be a “pretty angelic” husband and father, he surely must possess at least one devilish habit? “Sometimes I pilfer socks and underwear from sets,” he says, quickly clarifying, “They’re the clean, fresh ones. It’s not like I go into somebody’s trailer and pick out their underwear.” Evangeline Lilly and Jared Padalecki just breathed sighs of relief.
